Bad news on first Calfee
#4771 - 12/14/04 04:53 PM (68.234.88.140)

Hi guys, I had previously posted about my great deal on my first Calfee. Well quickness to act on a Buy it Now has gotten me one beat up Calfee. Listing advertised frame with extras, upon opening the box, I was pleasently surprised to find Ksyrium SSCs rather then Elites. That is where the good news ends. The frame was filthy, but nothing a little new bike enthusiasim could not take care of. The components that came with the bike all had salt water corrosion on them, the cable guide (barrel adjusters) on the head tube had actually snapped off, due to corrosion, forcing an easy out of the threads.

Removing the FSA carbon cranks with DA TT ring, I was happy to see they were in good condition. However, after removing the cranks I could not budge the bottom bracket. The ti shell seemed to be spinnning, upon flipping the bike over, I noticed the cable guide was sticking up, and to my horror I saw a half inch tear in the carbon. The carbon had been pushed into a little mound, hence the elevated cable guide. Looking into the gash with a light I saw the root of the bb problem... the knucklehead who had assembled the bike had used a too long screw that seemed to have slowly torn the carbon as well as dent the ti bottom bracket, evidently releasing it's bond to the carbon and allowing it to spin.

So all in all a sad story. I am seeking a refund from the seller, hopefully this goes smoothly. Calfee said this would most likely require a BB rebuild, $450 + $200 for a refinish is going to put me out another $650 for a ridable bike.

$800 Calfee sound too good, then it is... lesson learned. I guess my first Calfee is still a few years off.

Comments or condolences gladly accepted.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. If you want to part out the bike. Let me know. I would be interested in taking on a "project" like the Calfee if the price is right.

One of the drawbacks of buying a bike unseen.
I feel for you guy.
If you have a craigslist.org in your area, you might want to start there for your Calfee search.
Here are some in the Bay Area, CA:
http://www.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=1&subAreaID=0&query=calfee&cat=bik&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max

If you see something you are interested in, I'll be gladly to help you out. I could go and inspect the bike and/or frame for you if that helps.

$850 is still a bargain, just not a steal.

Write me if you want to discuss getting rid of your problem.

I would not fret yet. 850 plus 650 gives you essentially a new Calfee with K SSC wheels and a nice crank. PLUS you will get the remainder of the 25 year warranty. Plus you have the fork.

The remaining parts were:
Ultegra Rear Der, and Brake Calipers ?

FSA Team Issue Carbon Crank

Thompson Seat Post Probably fine

Syntace Aero Bars and Brake Levers probably fine plus all parts available

Selle Italia Tri Seat ?

Speedplay X series Pedals probably fine plus all parts available

Chris King Headset: probably fine plus all parts available

Two waterbottle Cages

You will have a lot for $1500. Don't forget a new Tetra is now 2395 plus 300 to 400 for a fork and at least 200 for a finish other than nude. So you around $3100 without wheels or any parts.

You will be under 50 percent of retail. That is not a bad deal. I know you are disapointed but step back and add up the numbers.

If the refinish etc. money is not there...wait until you have it. Clean up what you can and get it ready to put on your Calfee when you can afford to have it fixed.

Good luck.

Like Lon says, you're still looking at a great deal. Having said that, I can imagine how disappointing it must have been to open the box and discover that mess. Just remember, come spring you'll be riding the finest frame there is.

eBay does offer protection for these sorts of things through PayPal's buyer protection program if the item is significantly different than described. That said, bummer.

But as others have said, you can fix it up and your total cost will still be low. If you auction off all those parts individually, you'll be well in the black.

eBay's buyer protection plan is only good up to $200 which is essentially worthless on larger ticket items.

Actually that is not true if you use their credit system. Then it is unlimited. So it is wise to pay for anything expensive through PayPal buyer credit, and then just pay it off when it is due. That way you're protected.
