Calfee, great support and service
#4805 - 12/21/04 05:43 PM (209.192.166.34)

Hi all,

Hopefully my Calfee troubles are solved. I sent the frame back to Calfee for them to take care of the bottom bracket issue on my used Calfee.

Dean in repairs was very helpful and then he handed the phone off to Craig. He had seen the pictures of the bottom bracket, and he assured me they would do everything they could, to economically take care of the problem. They were great.

The same day I spoke with Craig, I stopped by Bob Parlee's workshop in Peabody, Ma. Bob is a member of my cycling club, ECV, and was impressed with my used Calfee frame and the way it has held up over 6 years. Bob gave me a tour of his workshop, showing frames in various stages of development, and the beautiful finished product. Bob spoke highly of Craig's bikes and his unmatched history in carbon frame making.

All in all, a nice, high end carbon afternoon.

Back to the bike, it has the cabernet red see through look, however, I would prefer just a clear coat over the carbon. Any thoughts on any pros and cons of clear coat vs. paint??

Thanks

I had cabernet red and switched to clear. I prefer it because the carbon shows through much better. With the red the light has to be very bright. I also now have a "nude" Calfee and I like that.

Take care.

Lon

greetings bwj75! welcome to the calfee family. i'm sure craig will take care of you the same way he always has with calfee owners.

i'm interested about your experience with parlee. what's your opinion on parlee bikes? aesthetics? after the factory tour would you have gotten a parlee or a calfee? i just haven't seen a parlee bike in person that's why i ask. thx in advance and happy holidays!

I've got nude on my D'fly and I'm loving it. No paint chip to deal with and the bike looks great. The only drawback is maybe the silk screens would come off over time but I haven't had that problem. Also you have to treat the carbon with 303 protectant every once in a while.
Good Luck

My race wheels match my paint scheme (see photo gallery) otherwise I might nude it. It is Cabernet Red also. It is a very pretty color, but the paint chips so easilly - not a knock on Calfee, that is just the way it is.

Go nude (no paint what so ever on the frame) if you can. Paint does not inherently stick to bicycle frames. I just noticed a chip on the downtube on my steel touring bike, and it has fenders! Ti and carbon are the only two frame materials you don't need to paint, so why would you want to? You have to paint steel and AL, so get a hot paint job on those frame, but carbon, keep it nude. You will have to use a sunscreen on the nude carbon, but it is not a big deal unless you do a lot of riding in the wet.

Ask Dean what your paint finishing options are and how much it would be to go nude from where you are not, vs how much to repaint, or touch up what you have. It may be cheaper to go nude.

Welcome to the Calfee club.
