I just put a deposit on a 2 year old "new" Dragonfly. Is there any disadvantage in buying an older model? The LBS told me the bike was returned after a week and offered me a good discount. $3,199 for the frame, fork, King Chris Head set and seat and head tube extensions. They are also sending the frame back to Calfee for a different paint job. Thoughts?

First, obtain the serial number of the frame. Next, check with Calfee for details on the improvements on the DF made since this one was manufactured.
Obviously, the Calfee warranty should be included.

Hi!
I have a 2-year old D'fly. To my knowledge (assuming you're getting stock geometry, etc.) the only change to the D'fly in recent years --- new in 2004 --- is the new "euro" design lookin' lugs. Nothing has changed with respect to weight, performance, etc.
Definitely try to get the LBS to pay for the warrantee transfer if ya can. This should be easy enough to do since the frame's being returned to Calfee for the new paint, etc. If you can't, and you're willing to wait, you should probably walk away from the deal and try to buy a used D'fly from somewhere else. For example, you could probably find a caring D'Fly owner who would sell you a fully built bike (Campy Record) for around $4,300. That person would also transfer the warrentee and you'd net out better.
So, ya see, the 25 year transferable warrantee really takes away the need to buy your frame from a shop. Thanks Craig!
Good luck!

When you get the serial number off the frame...call Calfee and ask if the frame was ever in for any repairs. If any damage was done that Calfee had to repair...they would have a record of it.
As others have said...the price is pretty steep for a used 2 year old frame. Definitely get them to extend the warranty to you (from Calfee) for the price.
Great ride...hope you enjoy it!

$3199 is a good price based on today's pricing. If the frame was only used for a week as the lbs said, you are getting a like new bike with a 23 year warrantee and a new paint job for about $1200 less than a new one.
On the other hand, the price for the frame, fork and headset, with seat and head tube extensions, when it was originally sold, was only $3500. (the price went WAY up last October) If it has been sitting around for two years, they should be willing to sell it for even less than $3200.

I called Calfee, the bike is being sold as new and with the original 25 year warrantee. Calfee told me there was only one change to the Dragonfly, in 2004 they changed the look of the lugs.
