I am looking for a new road frame for 2004. Currently riding a Rivendell, and it is just too long (top tube and chainstays) for my liking. Looking for a "road race" style frame; I will race and train on this frame. I am trying to keep the frame purchase at or under $1200. I've been looking at Steelman (leftover 2003 frames), Rock Lobster, Cervelo Super Prodigy, Strong, Serotta Fierte steel, as well as Dean Ti (local to me in Boulder, CO).
I'm open to custom or stock, whatever fits (6' 2", 90 cm inseam, so looking at around a 58 or 59 cm top tube, maybe 59 or 60 seat tube, with maybe a 73 seat tube angle).
So, Strong owners, tell me about your frames!!!

Carl is an easy guy to talk to. Give him a call, discuss your needs and see what he has to say. I feel you get a great value for your money with Strong.

I have two Strong custom frames. One Ti and one Foco. Identical geometry etc. one all Chorus build the other Record/Chorus Mix. Both Open pro wheels and the same exact bar and stem, pedals, and seatpost. One has the columbus Carve fork and the other the muscle. Both are sweet rides and yet have quite different personlities. The Foco has more road buzz ( not harsh in the least ) and the Ti is very plush and yet still quite responsive. Both bikes are nearly the same weight and at times it is a tough call as to which one I want to ride as both are so sweet. I want to ride them both all the time.
Carl has a real knack for figuring out what you need and want in a frame. Dealing directly with the builder makes a huge difference.

Unfortunately, I can not afford the Ti model, but it is good to hear that you like both equally and that they weigh about the same.

After months of researching builders, in January 2000 I ordered a steel (UltraFoco) OS frame from Carl. 1. After 4 years, the bike is still great! 2. After 4 years, Carl is still great! You can talk with him easily, directly, work out variations/options, be involved, and develop a relationship with someone who is really dedicated to your project. That makes a real difference when you wake up in the morning, helps to overcome that bleary feeling for sure! As for steel v ti (v carbon v alum?), that's an endless subject, in the end you have to ride the material to know what you like, one can't talk about "emozionale"!

My new Custom Strong Ti D/B Reynolds 6/4 Compact with a Reynolds Ouzo Pro Carbon Fork is buy far and away the best bike I have ridden--which include Trek Oclv's, a Trek Aluminum 1200 and 2500, a Serotta Legend Ti, a Serotta Ti HC Cross, a Slingshot, a Bridgestone Steel RB-2 and a Litespeed Catalyst. It is as comfortable as any of these other bikes, if not more, yet it is more efficient and more responsive to pedaling input. The finish looks great. I highly recommend Carl Strong's custom bikes. They ride as good as they look and vice versa.

Carl is auctioning a demo frame in your size on Ebay right now (or at least as of yesterday.) Search for "Strong frames." It might be just what you're looking for.
Starting bid is $600
