Many thanks to both of you for your thoughts.
What about the Profile carbon cages? They're aren't that light, so I wasn't sure if they fell into the same "no go" category or not.
If they're not possible, where can I get these Arundels? I'm not familiar with them.

The Profile carbon cages appear to be (nearly) idendical to the Arundel cages, so, yes they should work fine. The are some lower cost 40 gram, non metal cages solutions, such as the Trek Bat cage (which I use) or the Specialized rib cages just to name a few.

Have you had any more experience with your IRD cages ? Any problems with ejection on rough roads ?
Has any one else used IRD cages ?

Actually you can get Arundels discounted at Bikesmart.com where I just got mine. 35.99 each after discount.
Another totally eject proof option is King Ti cages though they are a few grams heavier than Arundel. They also have plenty of clearance between the top of the nuts and the bottles and room to use a nut driver or socket wrench.

Another option is the Rav X. (http://ravx.com/alphax.htm)They make two kinds of lightweight cages, at 21.7 grams and 22.7 grams. They fit on my Dragonfly Pro with the use of the washer that came with the cages. I got the heavier version, the Alpha, the other one is the Beta. I broke the Performance version earlier this year so I decided to get the stronger one. The Rav X Alpha feels like it wouldn't ever launch a bottle or break while fumbling to put a bottle back in while shifting, hitting a bump, and accelerating all that the same time. $50 a piece from the LBS.

I needed a cage that would fit over the campy clamp-on derailer (in other words open between the bolts). Since I ride a small 52cm Luna mostly on longer rides and the heat of Georgia, I needed two cages. I got the cages in May, they now have over 2000 miles and I have no complaints although the laquer has worn a bit inside from pulling bottles in and out, but that is only seen by me when the bottles are out... Extra bonus, I have the naked carbon calfee so the cages match the bike like they were designed for it. Yes at $40 they are not cheap, but hey I ride a calfee with Campy Record 10...(Campy cage won't work over braze-on and is pricy!!!)

i'll second calfeefan. i too got two profile karbon lite cages and they fit my calfee to a "t". the cage holds bottles snuggly and they are relatively light...on the average around 27 grams (advertised weight is 29 grams) without bolts. you can get 'em at ebay for less than $40 a piece. it's a nice touch to an all carbon bike.

From these sites it seems that it is true that the Rav X cage is identical to the Exhustar cage. The cage shown on the Alpha site, that cage is definately different. Based on what I can tell Alpha is a distributor and Exhustar is a manufacturer. I conclude that Alpha has OEM versions of Exhustar cages and it is possible from other manufacturers as well. Such is life in a global economy.

I have the cages on the brandcycle website. They're nice. And they're the same as the Exhustar cages but for the decals. A lot of that goes on, as you say. Cranks especially. And carbon bars, a lot of these things they only diff is the labels (and the price). I've even heard that the Campy Carbon Cranks are the same - Chorus or Record, that just the decals are different. Maybe they pick through them and the lighter ones are decaled Record like Zipp does in making its Z-series wheelsets, who knows - you know that there is a weight variance in these things that is evidently unavoidable. But the manufacturing process is aparently the same. Uh, I bought Chorus thank you very much!

Here's an update on the IRD carbon cages that I have been using for over a year now (previous thread 12/22/03).
All is well in water bottle land. Not a hint of ejection or wobbling. The cages hold the bottles secure. I use a 28oz and 22oz bottles. Living in New Hampshaaaah, the back roads can be quite treacherous. I have been behind riders whose bottles do a good impersonation of the space shuttle lifting off, and my bottles are held firm. Be advised; these cages are thin and flexible. If u are one who rips out the bottle and jams it back into the cage, these may not be for u.
