Tetra Pro Pic
#5337 - 03/09/05 04:28 PM (66.219.217.101)

I've finally got around to posting a pic of my Tetra Pro in the Gallery. I've had it for 10 months now and just love it.

My thanks to all you who have patiently answered my many questions both before and after purchase.

Very nice looking TPro. How much headtube extension is that on your frame?

I'm the second owner, so I'm not sure what the exact height is because I'm not sure how to measure it.

It is about 3cm from the top of the top tube to the bottom of the headset. The seatpost extension is about 24mm from the top of the top tube to the bottom of the seatpost clamp.

I'm glad you like the bike. It's a fine example of a great bike, that's for sure.

How do you like those compact cranks? I don't know anyone who has used them so I am very curious. I mean, if they are really that much of an improvement over a double even with a 12-27, say, why are they the exception and not the norm?

I'm not giving you a hard time, and certainly not your gorgeously done up bike. I am intrigued and not much mechanically minded.

When deciding on reg vs. compact cranks, this is how I looked at it.

34t ring = lower bailout gear without resorting to a triple (lower weight and better shifting on a double). Having a lower gear available is always good for fat guys like me. When I crack, I want to spin as much as possible. 39x27=36. 34x25=35, 34x27=33.

50t ring = it moves me one cog more toward the center of the cassette for most of my riding. That gives me one more cog to shift down to without having to move to the smaller chainring. Does that make sense?

I don't sprint or push descents so I don't mind losing the biggest gear.

As far as popularity... compacts just came back into vogue when Hamilton used them to win stage 16 in the 2003 TdF. Before that it was hard to find a compact double.

For me this is a good example of how "what works for a pro" with 6x my power-weight, doesn't work for me.

Here's a review of the cranks I have.

But Zinn says in his Cycling Primer that a compact crank "is too low to give a reasonably high gear for a bike with 650c or smaller road wheels." I noticed in your other post that the size of wheel you have.
