Clydesdale envy new
#5348 - 03/10/05 02:27 AM (24.21.147.115)

Are you really all mostly Clydesdales over 40? I am way over 40 but not much in the Clydesdale dept. Gee, I envy you all sometimes. Like at the top of a climb (seriously) and some-- usually very young -- Clydesdale-ette stomps the heck over the summit and is over and away. I know they save it all for that moment, but talk about bang for the buck. Ah youth.

Kind of a wannabe C-D. I'm like 175-180ish. Kind of Jaja/Zabelish. You know, a stayer. On my good days. Bad days I'm just dropped on the climbs and don't make it to the sprint. Its a mixed bag.

Wow, that's a new one. I've never heard of a cyclist wanting to be a Clydesdale. That's not to imply that being one is bad or wrong. You are what you are.

FWIW, Calfee are high end, expensive bikes. So it's usually those with more disposable incomes that are able to afford them. Usually, you need to work for awhile and become "established" to have that level of income. That income also usually comes with time and thus age which is why Calfee owners are mostly older than 40. JMHO.

I managed to afford one at 34, thanks to eBay!

Good point on having disbosable income being the reason most of us are in the older age area (I'm 52). Not only are we older, we are wiser than most on what makes a good bicycle in my opinion.

It does take a while to figure out what you want. I'm getting my D'Fly for my 50th birthday think I waited long enough

But being 6'1" and 160 I don't think that i can get in the Clydesdale Club

Fun thread, but for the sake of discussion (hold the "Doh, what else is a forum for" comments), consider the following:

Yes, Calfee is a high end, expensive FRAME at least after the October price increase. Before that the Tetra and particularly the Luna were relative bargains compared to many Litespeed, Colnago and other frames regularly advertised in the catalogs from Excel Sports, Colorado Cyclist, and websites such as Gita, Cbike, Competitive Cyclist, etc.

If the price alone were the primary factor you wouldn't see the river of Litespeeds and other high end brands out on the road every weekend ridden by cyclists far under 40 (not to mention the hordes at any duathalon or triathalon).

Another point to consider is why so many "young" racers, domestic clubs and local teams of all Cats, seem to ride primarily steel and Ti frames. Yup, many of them ride what they do because of sponsor subsidies - something I personally believe Craig Calfee should consider. (Picture a handsome Clydesdale with only a suave hint of gray in its coat riding a Calfee for the logo.) But many of them also express a preference for these frames.

Finally, at least for now, think about how prestige plays into any high end purchase. Check out all the Mercedes and BMWs rolling by. Certainly not all but a large number of them have young (by comparison) drivers. High cost, but they made the decision that it was worth it.

I am also struck both by the number of participants in this forum from Oregon and third hand hearsay about the number of Calfees in Eugene (location of the U of O and our version of the "People's Republic of ..."). I don't think the majority of these folks fit the older, wiser with a need for expensive toys category. However, reasonable minds could differ, at least on the last item.

My personal wonder of the moment is whether there is some kind of "natural" progression for some which is short circuited by younger Calfee riders. Just about all the riders I regularly lag behind still believe Ti is the holy grail. Perhaps Calfee riders are just quirky. Although I do love my Tetra.

Moving on to Clydesdales. I was shocked, shocked, the first time someone told me the Clydesdale category in a duathalon I was watching my son do started at 180 lbs. It has been longer than the last time I saw my high school honey since I have seen 180. This is clearly a statistical error. It should be 10 lbs. over whatever I am at the moment, just about where Congress should draw the line on whoever deserves to get taxed the most.

I used to be hooked on high end audio and the majority (again, not everyone) seemed to fit a common demographic and similar taste in topics with the Calfee forum. Although there was far less reason for that given that they were buying and talking about equipment which they couldn't hear if you believe the aging v. loss of high end hearing graphs.

Okay, lunch hour is over. Back to reading documents.

I bought mine at 33. I'm now 43 (duh) and fit into the OP's original statement. But no eBay for me. ...I did get a GREAT deal though.

i have yet to even ride a calfee, but i bought one sight-unseen (ebay) and it arrives on tuesday, march 15th. a date i'll surely remember for a long time as I suspect it will be a turning point in my cycling--if not life! OK, whew, deep breaths, got a little worked up there.

i was originally looking at the tetras, but this Dragonfly came up and was a good deal so i sprang for it. but I never, ever could have gotten a dragonfly (or even really a tetra) brand new. I'm 24. I've been saving for a long time, and perhaps live more frugally than your average 24 year old. (not that I have the entire lump sum right now. but what the hell, I'll come up with it somehow!)

But you may be on to something. Every person I've ever seen on a Calfee was over 40.

Woo hoo! I can't wait until Tuesday! I've been riding a 26 lb bike!

Laurel

I hate it when reality bites you in the maximus.

After ranting at length about how the majority of Calfee owners couldn't be THAT old I ran into a group of riders this weekend unloading their bikes at a favorite local starting point. Three Calfees. Owners all well over 40.

Humbled, but hoping my sample was statistically irrelevant.

Come on you younsters, Calfee Rocks.

Steel comes from the Rust Belt. Not cool.

I had another thought about Pintsized clyedesale envy comment triggering by reading in VeloNews that Bobby Julich just won the Paris-Nice. His stats are given as 6' 149 lbs.

In addition to our own weight class Clydesdales ought to get some evening up in the name of competitiveness. Maybe arm wrestling should be added as part of the GC.
