Luna Pro Fixie - almost ready to ride new
#5290 - 03/04/05 03:15 PM (66.7.29.138)

Just wanted to say that my Luna Fixie is almost finished. I should have her on the road tomorrow. She's got a Bicycle Specialities T/A track crank, 1/8th inch width 44 chainring and a T/A BB with a steel axle, 16 tooth Surly cog. I ended up buying an Alpha Q cross fork on eBay which was about 5 mm too short. But I was real impressed with the quality of it, so I ordered one and the LBS is going to install it today. Record threadless headset (decided to save $50 over a King, which may be overkill for the road). I've got a lot of Salsa Stems that I bought on eBay, one of those should work; and an ITM Milenium Bar that I'll probably change later for something without grooves. I'll be running a canti on the bike, and I'll probably run a rear fender all the time, with a front removable job, but we'll see how I like it. I may just get some SKS race blade removable fenders - a buddy is getting some and I want to see how he likes them. I picked up a 20 spoke radial DT bladed w/Phil Wood road hub front wheel. I've got a smooth commute so hopefully that will give me an extra 1/2 MPH or so on the flat-downhill roads that make up my ride in, and give the headwinds I face on the ride home a lesser bite. I've still got my old Superbe Pro Hub on the back, laced to an MA40. It was designed as a bombproof messenger wheel, which it was. Since I really need different gears riding in and riding home, I'm going to get a flip/flop hub pretty soon, once I'm sure of the gears that I'll need (and I make a little more bank on eBay selling some old parts and a couple frames). No brake hoods, not my style, running a cross brake lever for the front brake. Riding fixed all the time, no need for a back brake. Thompson seatpin. I want to upgrade my Arione road bike saddle to the carbon version and trickle down the regular Arione to this bike, so I'll be running a San Marco Era until that happens. I'll post some pictures when it is finished. The frame is built like a Luna Cross so it'll take like 32s in the back and the fork will allow a 45, so it'll work well in the snow, and will go real fast with 23s in the dry. I could even do cross races on it with a fixed gear! Go Calfee!

I haven't even seen the thing with a fork on it yet! I'll show 'ya what I 'got when I get it tomorrow. & hopefully they'll be approved by mid-week. It is going to be missing a few high zoot bits, but should still be 'somethin.

I'm sure your Record threadless will do very nicely. Chris King headsets are real nice here in the Northwest, though, where it rains so much. The lifetime guarantee covers water getting into things. On an aluminum bike, the tubes can get water in them if the headset isn't sealed right and some of they really do leak hereabouts.

I have Kings on my other two bikes. A friend was like, save the 50 bucks. I was like, ok.

I'm impressed with your build-up and how you like to ride a fixie. You have a might-fine bike so enjoy it my friend.

Just rode 2 1/2 hours on it. The thing is lighter than my Dragonfly (at least with its everyday wheels on it). It is so responsive and it just motors along in that 44x16. I'm going to be commuting on it a lot, I think. I'll put some pictures that I took up soon. Get fixed!

Hey I got a pic up in the gallery. Will shoot some better ones this weekend. I already swapped the seat for an Arione and the stem for a flat rise no decals Salsa.
http://www.bikefanclub.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1723

And I had to change to a differnt cog because the 16 was too narrow and was spinning when I would skid. Can't have that. Surly cog and Suntour Superbe Pro track hubs are not compatible. Euro Asia 17 was what the lbs had so I'm spinning more now, with not as much top end. Thats ok for now. If the 30 MPH winds would just stop. Please.

Oh by the weigh it is just 15 lbs, 13 ounces. Cost me $1500 about $1500 bucks.

If I went weight weenie on it I could make it like 13 pounds or something, but it is light enough...

Absolutely wonderful.

I really like the flipped and chopped bars on mine for blasting around the neighborhood. Especially at night with lights when I salom driveways and sidewalks and parked cars in total silence. But if I take it for a long road ride I start to miss the road bars. Your bike looks...just might be close to the perfect bike there.

Maybe I need another fixed for the road, to go with my Litespeed, in addition to two mountain bikes...to add to the collection of three other adult and three kid bikes in the garage...Horrible. Horrible.

You have to share that bike with the folks on fixedgeargallery.com

I will - and thanks for the compliments. It is an absolute joy to ride 44x17 is so great for me. Not too big for the hills, no too small for the tailwind or downhill. Reminding me how to spin. Got to get a 16 set up for the strong days. Less than 16 pounds and I get to ride it every day, and I didn't spend a (large) fortune. Fun, fun, fun. Tomorrow I may find out how she does in the snow.

I'm going to get some better pics of 'her this weekend with the different (Arione) saddle and (no decals, flat rise) stem. I'll send to to www.fixedgeargallery.com and to Kahuna (here). Some detail shots and such too.

I've never been a bullhorn guy. But the Salsa stem gives it that ironclad feel. Maybe some stiffer bars in the future, too. Sounds like you're havin' fun on yours. Sounds like you have a lot of bikes. That is what garages are for. If you have too many there is always Pennysaver or eBay. I think that road fixies make great training bikes, and for me, it will save me some hassle because some weeks I'll just leave my race wheels on the D-fly.

I've ridden it in to work every day this week. The 44x17 keeps me from hammering on the flats, and I find myself out on the bike again the next day...it has taught me to pace myself.

Did Calfee put the horizontal drop on the back or did it come that way?

It came like that as a custom option - I don't know if it costs extra or what...I mean the thing isn't really custom except for that...and if they know how to cut those horizontal ti dropouts already, what is the big deal for them...
