Phil Wood BB woth Campy Crank
#5495 - 03/23/05 01:37 PM (65.195.10.12)

Is anyone in here running a Phil BB with a Campy crank? Which Phill BB are you using, the steel, ti or magnium version? Is the ti version adequately stiff with the ti spindle? Is the magnium really stiffer than the ti?

I have the TI or Magnum version not sure - it came with the bike. I've had it out and it is light as heck. I specifically avoided getting an outboard bearing crank because it is so light and smooth that I didn't want to change. It is strong enough for me, a 180 pound guy who has won field sprints in a cat 3 race. Compared to the T/A steel axle with Aluminium track cranks on my Luna fixie, I still think it feels strong (with Campy Chorus Carbon Cranks). Now, that T/A combo is awesome, but carbon cranks have that modular feel - seems like that they catch more of your force, and combined with it being on a Dragonfly, it is a great set up. I'm sure you'd like it.

I asked the guy, it is Ti.

Thanks. I'm gonna go with the ti version and a Campy carbon crank. The outboard bearing cranks have interested me, but after reading reviews about problems with FSA's new crank rings not being properly pinned and ramped as well as ongoing changes with their megaexo cranks rubber rings, I think I'll wait till they get all the bugs worked out.

Seems like the Phil is a really nice product because of its durability, low weight, excellent bearings and the ability to fine tune the chainline which many of todays bottom brackets do not let you do.

All I can say is that I'm happy with it.

If I had a lot of money I'd get the Zipp crank, though. I love there stuff and I could get it for like $650 - but enough is enough. It probably wouldn't matter s'much for me.

I just put the FSA SLK Compact MegaExo crankset on my Tetra. The only hiccup was with the crush washer (turns out I didn't need it. I called FSA about it, and they said its only purpose was cosmetic).

I've only put a few hundred miles on it, but so far no problems. Shifting is just as crisp as the FSA Compact Carbon Pros it replaced. If I run into any problems, I'll be sure to post.

Did you install the SLK yourself? I've got a Gossamer MegaExo sitting in its box in my office and I'm trying to decide whether it goes to the lbs or home.

I installed it myself, but then again the only thing I don't do on my bikes is install/remove headsets (those tools are too expensive).

It really isn't a big job. You just need the right wrench (I used the Park BBT-9). Just make sure to use anti-seize compound (if you have the ti bb shell) and make sure you don't cross thread it.

I asked my Calfee dealer if I needed to have the bottom bracket shell faced and chased. He laughed at me and said he'd bet everything was still straight. It was. And to be honest I not sure you can face it... encased as it is in the carbon.

When I first put everything together, it seems too tight and didn't spin freely. I called FSA and they told me to remove the big crush washer (aka rubber shell spacer) that fits between the left bearing cup and the bb shell. They said the alloy middle spacer provides the correct spacing. They just include the crush washer because some people can't stand to see threads. I removed it, tightened everything back up to proper torque, and haven't looked back.

HTH

I recently purchased a used phil ti/mag bb ($80, couldn't ignore it). Man is it light. Since I'm on the heavy side - 190+lb, I contacted Phil re whether there was a weight limit on the bb. I was told that the ti spindle could easily handle my weight and is rated for someone up to 250lb! (Note -if you're 250lbs, don't use a ti spindle!)

I'm currently trying out a low end shimano (RSX) compact crank to see whether I like the gearing, currently 46x36.

One thing you may want to consider is the difference in taper between Campy (ISO) and Japanese (JIS) tapers. Its something like 2 degrees. What that means is a Campy crank on a JIS spindle won't go on far enough and a Shimano crank on a campy spindle may bottom out. Nevertheless, phil makes one smooth and light bb! Just get the right one.

Sounds like any rider under 200lbs then could probably get away with the regular Premium Ti Phil BB instead of the Ti/Mag BB. Nice purchase for $80.
