FSA SLK Compact MegaExo Cranks: A short review
#5511 - 03/23/05 10:48 PM (66.219.217.101)

Since some forum members seem to be interested in these, I thought I'd share my impressions after a few hundred miles.

As I stated in an earlier post, I'm a big rider and ride a Tetra Pro 64cm. It came with the "extra stiff" tubeset. Because of a little flex in the bb, I regretted not getting the "super stiff" option. I wanted to try the Shimano 7800 cranks but I'm sold on compact cranks, so I was using the FSA carbon pro compact with the Pro Ti bb.

When I saw the SLK Compact MegaExo this year I thought, "That's for me!". Install was easy. Are they stiffer? The little bit of flex I noticed is now gone. So, I would say they are. By how much? I have no idea.

In another post someone mentioned others having problems with the MegaExo setup. I haven't had any yet, but I'll post any problems if they occur.

If you have any other questions, fire away.

Thanks for all the great info you all share here on a regular basis.

Thanks for this info and your post on installing your Mega Exo. On a somewhat related compact crank line, I've used the FSA compact carbons on all three of my bikes for the past year (Cannondale, Klein and now Calfee).

Over time I think I'm starting to figure out how to use them properly, but the Calfee really made what I didn't know obvious - particularly when riding with bronco mashers (an extreme subset of Clydesdales). I've now put together an 11-25 cassette to see if this will let me keep a place in the paceline while still having some lung tissue left for the hills.

That cassette is why I'm particularly hoping the Mega Exo brings something more to the party. I'll be looking for your updates on how you like them.
