Calfee web site security
#5542 - 03/25/05 03:04 AM (4.163.206.169)

not a bike post per se, but...
I ordered some small items from the Calfee web site awhile back and meant to mention this - I was in a big hurry to order and didn't notice until I clicked 'Send' that the entire transaction was unencrypted. Not even encrypted after I sent the order. great. So...caveat emptor, eh? Just thought you all should know, if you were wanting a t-shirt or socks or something.
I sent an email to the web contact, but no answer (funny - I never get email replies from Calfee, yet others seem to).

I sent a number of emails to Calfee with no answer when I was contemplating getting a Calfee. Although my LBS guy has talked directly with Craig a number of times since I ordered my bike I still have never heard any feedback from the company.

I have never had replies, either. I have written a couple of times in connection with the possibility of a second life warranty (another thread a few weeks back), and never heard back. Now it may be too late as the bike is being built!

I'm delighted to have the folks there spend the time on bikes, but if they'd rather you phone, it'd be better to make that clear.

Craig personally e-mailed me twice last year when I was purchasing my Tetra Pro. I think they've been going through some organizational changes this year. Hopefully it'll settle out.

I received an email reply (!!!):
"Yes, it went unencrypted. We are setting up a new store, with
encryption, using OSCommerce .... Sorry for not yet
offering a less risky web purchase."

My suggestion was to have some policy statement on the site for now. But hey, I got a reply! I am somebody! (after 2 Luna Pros)

I'm a nobody and I bet I've had well over a dozen wonderful conversations with Dean and Craig. They have advised me and helped me many times. I don't think there is anyone building bikes who cares more and few to come close or match him.

I'm in the queue for a Tetra Pro right now. Ordered it about 4 weeks ago. Craig responded to my emails on multiple occasions. Even encrypted sites can have their info hacked into. I wrote programs which hacked into protected servers while in college as part of CMPSC classwork. As soon as new firewalls are built guys are working on breaking through them. It's a never ending game.
You are never totally safe even when you see the little lock at the bottom of the screen.

That said, Calfee being a high quality company should encrypt their online store.

I know it is off topic...but I wasnt' at the time even a Calfee owner and i called to see what they had in stock. Well, the guy on the other end, not only did his best to check in house, but called bikeshops that he knew carried their bikes. He called me back at the end of the day, just like he said he would. I was soooooo impressed!!!

Like I said - some get through, some don't and hopefully the latter is a minority.

However now I just hope they aren't custom building the seat post collar I ordered. Since I placed my order through the Calfee web site, I have placed other web orders and have received DVDs from Hong Kong, books from Wisconsin, and a watch from Colorado. But still no seat post collar. sigh.

My wife tried to order a calfee t shirt through their web site for me for fathers day last year. The shirt never arrived and we were never billed. So I would not count on ever seeing that collar.

yeah i think you're right. i can't find one like it though (for a 54cm Luna) the one that came with it has a very low profile. Otherwise I'd like to get the Campy one.

great frames, just not set up to compete as an online business. which is probably hard to do these days anyway. time will tell
