Rear axle width
#5591 - 03/31/05 04:51 AM (66.205.8.2)

After using 7 and then 8 speed setups in my Moots road bike, it finally came time to upgrade again to Campy Record in 10 speed. I therefore decided to buy some Campy Record rear hubs to go with my old 7/8 speed Record large flange front wheels. This would give me two sets of training wheels and all the while retaining my beautiful large flange front wheels/hubs.
After getting the rear hubs and building up the wheels, it came time to fit them into the frame for final dishing and tensioning, this is when i noticed something quite interesting. The Moots has actually got approximately a rear spacing of 133mm, but this is not uncommon, as my Orbea frame also has a 133mm spacing as well.
So what to do?? squeeze in the frame everytime when drawing the QR, or just re-space the axle for the extra 3 mms. I decided to do the latter idea, and this would also reduce the wheels dish by 3mms in the process.
I therefore replaced the thin washer thats fitted between the axle and the left side end cap on the Record hubs with a suitable thickness one i skimmed to correct diameter in my lathe.
Actually i had to make four of these washers since my total set of Record rear hubs is now four as well, oh yeah you know how it goes two 36s for training and two 28s for racing.
Anyway it seems that a lot of the frames are being made up for this mysterious 133mm spacing nowadays, at least the two i own are, despite them being 6 years apart in age. Is this just a pure coincidence both frames i have are like this???.
Are there any other Moots owners who have checked their rear dropout spacings to see what they are, i'd be interested to know.
