Ride Stories
#5655 - 04/10/05 05:38 PM (24.23.13.209)

As I ride the American Bicycle Trail in Sacramento I have some interesting (to me, at least) experiences. On Saturday I was riding a ten mile trip downtown. The trail goes to a historic and tourist area of the part of the origianl Sacramento city from gold rush times. I like to go to a local sandwich shop to eat a light meal before heading back to the trail. This offers a nice rest and offers an interesting view of all the people going by.

On this particular day I was passed by a guy on a Cervello TT bike. I see all kinds of people on the trail and am a bit disdainful of some people I see on TT bikes since it seems to me they bought the bike because they think it is faster than a regular road bike. Especially telling is when you see a guy in middle-age who is overweight on such a bike.

When I arrived at the sandwich shop I saw the Cervello leaning against the building and the guy inside sitting at a table against the window. When I got my sandwich I asked if I could sit with this guy and he cordially invited me to sit. I ended up having a very enjoyable conversation with John. He told me about how got the bike and what he likes to do. He was very interested in seeing my Calfee so I showed him the details of the bike. It was a very nice conversation we had.

I realize this is not much of a topic but interesting exchanges like this please me. I tend to ride alone most of the time. Being able to share a ride a bit or have a friendly conversation makes it a very pleasant ride. I thought to share this with you all and hope others can share ride stories as well.

Does running over a bunny during a flat out downhill run count as a riding story?

This morning on a downhill I ran over dead rodent of some type. It was still dark and I was using my lights so didn't see it until the last second. I'm glad I didn't skid off it ala bannana peel.

Insightdriver, in the spirit of your thread.

During different rides and different courses over the past few weeks I've seen and stopped to talk to two different people I went to high school with but haven't seen in years and years. Then we sent on and finished the ride together, exchanged phone numbers, checked up on kids, etc. I also frequently ride alone, mostly because the rides have to fit into other scheduling priorities like darlin' daughter soccer games on weekends. Having the opportunity to renew these acquaintances and opening up the possibility of starting these friendships all over again based in riding is huge fun.
