I just purchsed a Flight deck system and it does not turn on automatically when the wheel turns or one of the buttons on the shifters is pushed.Once the system is awakened it works fine. I have to push one of the buttons under the unit to activate it.It says in the manual that it should turn on but I don't see anywhere it can be activated in the settings. It is a sc-6502 head. Is there a secret way to get it to work?

On the Shimano site I went through the directions and it seems that if properly installed, hitting A or B button will take the head out of power-saving mode (start it up). I suggest you check your installation. If the buttons on the head unit work then I suspect the signal cable is the problem.

On my newest one I have to hit the button on the back of the computer on the right as you face forward. It is a couple of years old however. My older ones start right up. The difference being with mine is that when you hit the botton it then lets you pick which bike if you are using it on more than one. Once it is running unless I stop for a long time it always starts right back up. If I stop for a long time I have to hit the button again.

Something is wrong with that. I think, if this is the true behavior that Shimano should fix the computer. It should start up automatically, right? A Cateye has the option to start automatically or require a start button push. From looking at the Shimano literature I did not see operation being much different from any other bike computer I've seen.

I've got the Shimano phone number, I'll call them in the morning and see what is up. meanwhile I thought there might be a mode to set in setup when you get to the number of rider mode where you could opt out of multi bikes but there is not that option just 1 2 3 or 4. It seems there should be a way to opt out on this just like you can if you don't have a 10th cog on the cassette.

O K here's the scoop, I called Shimano and found that the 6502 head does not have the auto turn on feature. The 6500 head had this feature but because of it, it went through batteries very fast so they got rid of the auto turn on feature. Funny that all of the aftermarket manufacturers can make it work but Shimano can't Kind of makes you wonder what kind of grouppos we could have if we weren't saddled with a company content to go backwards with thier technology.

My new model Flite Deck has the original battery and it is coming up on 4 years in a month or so. I would rather push a little button before riding than have my battery go dead quickly. Plus I have the advantage of switching that to my don't worry about anything bike once I get it set up since you can program more than one bike.

I dont own the Shimano flight deck but i have a riding buddy that had two of them on his bikes, that is until he broke the wires, hes now waiting on new wire kit/mounts. I'll tell you however that i encountered an interesting situation with my Cateye cordless 7 model when i decided to use the auto start/stop feature. Sitting at a traffic light on one of my first outings using the computers auto start/stop feature, i watched the display recording speeds of up to 30 plus mph while i wasnt even moving. It seems the system grid in the road for sensing the vehicles may be partially responsible for this situation since i've only ever seen it happen at lights with road sensors, but its enough to annoy you if you happen to live in an area that has a fair set of traffic lights. The auto off feature is great to have, and for some they really like it and swear by it, but considering the few negative problems associated with it sometimes its easier to just press the start button.
-------------------- Its time to ride.
