Hello all. I'm the proud owner of a 2000 postal 5500. After many thousands of miles and a couple minor crashes the bike's paint has become a bit of a blight. I'm also kind of sick of the garrish red-white-blue format. I don't feel like spending the dig and sending it out for a repaint but understand that I can't just rip the paint off like I did on my Bianchi or De Bernardi. Any suggestions from someone who's done a repaint? I would be happy to hear about a proper method of peeling decals and sanding/removing the gelcoat.
thanks all cheers

If you want to D-I-Y, you need to read Damon Rinard's article on building carbon bikes (he's built several), which includes a section on painting here:

If you want to pay someone to paint it, Joe Bicycle Painting paints Kestrels and Calfees here:

Hold on just a minute! I called TREK and the warranty is voided unless you use a shop they say is okay. I've got the same frame and am tired of the same colors and was looking for a change. THEY will only paint the colors they are using now, but they did say that you could use other venders. I'm getting mine painted in May at www.airglowpainting.com The guy is a few towns over and does good work from what I understand. You have to suposedly hand sand the frame, it can't be blasted like others. Trek said they will still warranty the frame if he paints it, but I think this place and one other are the only places they will let you use.

Hmmmmm....
I called LeMond about repainting my '97 OCLV. They said they would do it but that I had to choose a solid color and decals would be limited to black or white. No option to use their current paint schemes.
Uhhh, no thank you. If I was going to spend the money on repaint I think I'd like it how I want it, not how they tell me I can have it.
