Klein Specific Barrel Adjusters
#613 - 01/12/04 03:30 PM (205.184.117.28)

Starting a new thread here to encourage multiple postings! This is a reply to rossRED's question in another thread.

Since Kleins have internal shift cables they don't have the braze-on type mount for barrel adjusters (or downtube shifters for that matter) on the downtubes. Up until (I think) 2002 they provided barrel adjusters for Shimano shift cables at the point where the cables leave the STI levers and that location works great for Shimano only. Since Campy shift cables are hidden under the bar tape there's no place to put the barrel adjusters. In 2002 Klein changed to downtube barrel adjusters which work with both Shimano and Campagnolo but they're not the same as what comes when you buy a shifter set since they have to fit in Klein's aero cable guide. I haven't seen these close-up but I know the Klein dealers can get them, and they can still get the hood-type adjusters too. Anyway I'm not sure if you get the barrel adjusters when you buy a bare frame but you'll probably want them before your build-up. Timto built his without any adjusters and that may or may not become an issue during shake down; personally I like having them.

Be sure to download the owner's manual and tech manual from the Klein web site and you'll find more information there.

hey DiabloScott thanks for ur feedback! U've helped me greatly!

Ok i found out that campy record make seat posts with diameters of 31.6 and 32.4 mm, which one would i require?

Also im still puzzled about the barrel shifters. i googled it and now im even more confused....lol...oh well!

I agree that the piontsettia red is an awesome colour. Its even better lookin in reality. I however was on ebay last night and ur nightstorm coloured frame sold for £316. It was a size 54 too....man i was soo tempted!

I'm just counting the days down till Friday when i can pick up my frame.

Origionally i was about to buy a Ridley Icarus (www.ridley-bikes.com) as they r makin waves at the moment. They also do a free custom paint job and i had decided on a Klein-esq ROSSO RED paint job. However been messed about for the past 3 months now so i canceled. And oh boy am i glad i did. Picked up the very frame which only a few months ago was £1100 for £700. With the money saved i can now afford Record 2004 so im a happy bunny at the moment!

Most bikes have braze-ons on the downtube where the shifters used to be located in the olden days (they're called "shifter bosses"). When Shimano came out with STI they provided a little cable guide thing with in-line, barrel-type cable adjusters that attached to the shifter bosses so you could fine tune your shifting on the fly; the cable housing ran from the shift/brake levers to the barrel adjusters and then the cables were exposed the rest of the way to the derailleurs. When Campy came up with Ergo they pretty much used the same kind of device.

Kleins obviously don't have a braze-on fitting there - they have an elegant dimple with access for internal cable routing so you can't mount any kind of adjuster there. Klein's answer was to put the barrel adjusters near the brake hoods for STI levers but that didn't work for Campy because the cables aren't exposed. Then Klein switched to downtube barrel adjusters so folks like you could have your Campy and adjust it too - but they're different than the ones you get with Campy or Shimano shifters because they don't attach to any braze-on - I don't know how they stay put but apparently it works - fill us in when you get them.

The Klein website is www.kleinbikes.com

Dude - you MUST go download the Tech Manual - for 2003 it's here:
http://www.kleinbikes.com/assets/asset_upload_file416_1172.pdf
For the Q Pro Carbon Frame it lists:
31,6mm seatpin
If the Record unit is carbon fiber remember to NOT grease it when you put it in.

The Tech Manual for 2002 actually gives a better description of the barrel adjusters including a part number:
http://www.kleinbikes.com/assets/asset_upload_file589_1172.pdf

And the 2001 Tech Manual for 2001 includes our Quantum Pro bikes before they went to carbon rear ends - it includes the part numbers for the STI barrel adjusters that I have for my Dura Ace.

Anyway - the Klein dealer won't have any trouble ordering these for your bike even if he's never seen them - his Klein rep will know what you need - be sure to say that you're building with Campy and not Shimano and you'll be fine. Are you buying the frame from a legit dealer? If so my guess is that the adjusters will come already installed but you might ring him up and ask.

And start some new threads so we can keep the interest going. I've been riding my steel foul weather Merckx for the last few months and the Klein has been hanging in the garage; it looks pretty and it's sure clean but I'm getting itchy to ride it again.
