Hello all,
The month of May was designated A Million Mile Month in the greater Sacramento California area. The purpose was to raise awareness of the benefits to reduce pollution and increase health and well-being by bicycling. I signed up to log my milage and pledged to do 160 miles in the month. I had other committments that interferred with my time that I could ride on my bike, so I kept the pledge low. I did manage to do 280 miles having only two weekends free and using a couple of short weekday rides in spite of the heat.
The month motivated me to ride more often. Now, in the month of June I am riding better than I have ever done before. Yesterday, with a cycling friend who contacted me through an excercise site I rode my personal best doing a 40 mile ride at 16 mph average speed.
I am 52 and only have been actively riding regularly for three years now. I occassionally rode throughout my life. Would anyone else like to share their ride stories?

ttt ...for Mr. insightdriver.
Sorry I had to bump your thread off the main page for my Hawaii question. I'm leaving soon and don't need it up any more. Just wanted to move it back for you. Hopefully you'll get some nice stories.
Me? 41. Have been riding bikes obsessively for the last 6 or 7 years. But mostly mountain bikes. The last year or so I added road riding, and it hasn't helped. More obsessed. Ride any chance I get. Have a garage full of bikes (I get to live through the bikes of my wife and kids also) 5 or 6 are mine, couple mountain bikes, sweet road bike, and a couple Fixed gear bikes, one I'm in the middle of rebuilding now. There's no end in sight. Parts everywhere in the garage. Just ride, ride, ride any chance I get. It's keeping me sane, and outside. Wife does't mine since there's worse things I could be mid-lifing with or through. I don't do anything else. There's a close shop road ride I join when I can make it after work and I'm able to hang on to fast group. There's a mountain bike club that I join their rides any chance I get. But mostly I ride solo, odd-times, before sunup and work with lights. Weekends in the middle of the afternoon heat. I don't like planning. Just the riding. Any time the compulsion hits. I should do better and join people more often, which I could. But there's something about the solace, and the working and the challenging myself that I prefer that draws me out on the road and trail.
Good luck on your miles. Keep pedaling.

Hi Nev,
Thanks for posting. I'm a bit more diversified myself with a hobby I'm working on (reenactor, American Civil War). I live in apartment and don't have the room to collect much. I do have a bent I don't ride any more and one bike extra that my son outgrew and a cheap mountain bike that was given to us.
I did a fast 20 mile ride today and am going to go back out and do another ride in a while. I'm chilling now and refueling for my next ride in a nice air-conditioned apartment.

My current ride today was 63.48 miles in length, at an average speed of 15.8mph. My maximum speed was 28.5mph which was going down the grades of overpasses over expressways. For much of the ride my cruising speed was between 19 and 20 mph with a few stretches running at 23 mph for 15 minutes or so at a time. This is getting me fitter than I have ever been before.
I wonder why others don't post about their personal improvement. My story basically starts about 4 years ago when I started to cycle more regularly than I ever had before. I had moved to Sacramento, California and there is a wonderful bicycle trail along the American River of approximately 31 miles in length. This is all class 1 bicycle trail which means it is paved and no motor vehicles allowed plus it does not cross any intersections other than park entrances along the river.
I have been lucky to meet a cyclist who has developed a number of bicycle routes that go to different cities and multiple routes that go along nice roads with little traffic. On these rides I get a kick out of looking off in the distance and seeing the city skyline, thinking to myself that I rode from over there and it sure looks far off now.
