Just wondering if anyone has investigated the bamboo frames that are linked on the Calfee home page.I assume one is out of my price range,so I haven't pursued it.

I have a picture of one and I think it is the most elgant frame I've ever seen.

A while ago, I think it was early last year, Craig Calfee asked (on his website I believe)if anyone was really interested in buying a bamboo framed Calfee. He was trying to gauge the cyclists interest and perhaps consider putting the bike into production. I haven't heard about the response, or if he would consider building them.

When I clicked on the link on the Calfee site I got an error. I'll try again and report back.

I checked. The link now works. It is a word document about bamboo frames so it I recommend people check it out. In the paper Craig says production will be limited to about 100 frames per year. I could go on but the facts are all in the document so go read it, folks.

Any idea of the cost?

The bamboo frame is $2695.00 and is a bit of a custom, even in the standard geometry, because the tubes are selected for the riders weight.

I remember when Craig Calfee inquired on the old Kahuna forum if there would be any inrerest.

I seem to remeber that one was ridden at the Hawaii Ironman a few years ago.

If he only made a matching fork....

It was due to a financial windfall that came my way that enabled me to get my Custom Tetra Pro. I don't think I would have choses bamboo if it was available at the time. I have a lot of faith in carbon construction including it's repairability. I would be very insecure riding a bamboo bike knowing that crashing it could be a very expensive repair experience. I think of carbon fiber repairs as being in a similar class as fiberglass repair, not technically difficult, just expensive.

Imagine the drool factor if you rode a bamboo Calfee. It's exotic, mind-bendingly cool. Now that I do have my Calfee carbon bike I would consider a bamboo one, only now I don't have the financial wherewthal any more.

The bamboo bike is apprently quite good. Rides and handles very well.

Carbon fiber 'repairs' aren't so much repairs and they are replacement of the damaged parts.

I've ridden one of the Bamboo bikes. Very nice ride, very cool looking, quite stiff in the BB. Handles just like a Tetra. I was in disbelief during the whole ride.

Went for an Elium instead, since I already have 3 Calfees in the family, and I worried about the longevity of the bamboo when subjected to the humidity cycles (wet winter, dry summer) of Portland.

They are indeed available. I've seen 3 different specimens.

Mike:

Do the bamboo bikes look as good in person as in the pics?

Dave,

Lets put it this way....

My wife, who saw no need for me to buy YAB (Yet Another Bike), came to the shop one day and said, "You can't buy a new bike unless you get the Bamboo one".

They ARE that cool looking!!

Alas, she relented and let me get the Elium.

Mike

Mike: As related on the Serotta Forum; the formula for the correct number of bikes to have is N+1, where N is the number of bikes you have now.

Dave,

LOL

I'd try to educate my wife, but she would probably remind me that the number of husbands she should have is N-1, where N is the number of bicycles I plan to purchase in the future.

Luckily, my wife is my riding partner. Every now and then I'll tell her she needs a new bike. She responds with something like; " I don't need anything else, my Calfee is just fine thank you." She doesn't care what I do, or have, or buy. It's a great relationship!

My wife is also my riding partner, and her response always starts out just like yor wife's. Sometimes she adds "and neither do you"

We've been married happily for 24 years, partly because I can tell when she is serious about something, or just having fun with me.

Gee, I guess it isn't all gender-linked, is it? My husband is the "I don't need anything new" person in our house. I wish he would buy some new things sometimes, so that I don't feel so guilty when I indulge. When I built up the Calfee with all the fancy parts, I asked Loren if he wanted a piece of the action (team buy on the parts) and all he wanted was a new shifter for his 10 year old Gios.

He's still mourning the wreck two years ago of his 1980-era Trek with the downshifters. He truly loved that bike, and I sorta don't blame him. I think it was one of the first stock frames Trek made. Once they were a custom operation only and a small company. We saved the head badge and made it into a pendant.

No the position is NOT vacant! Sorry, fellas.
