What can a nude frame be signed with?
#6255 - 07/05/05 01:31 AM (24.21.147.115)

I don't know if I will actually go through with this, for a couple of obvious reasons. But I am going to watch the Cascade Classic this weekend in Bend, and was hoping to get some autographs from well-known riders, if I'm lucky to enough to find them at an appropriate time. Is there any kind of marker that would show up on a nude carbon frame?

Right, I could always ask if they'd sign a team cap, or something. And maybe that's the better idea. One of my riding friends had his white aluminum frame signed at that race a few years ago.

There is a Sharpie that marks on black. Beware as it is a permanent marker at least on paper. I use it to mark the cleats when I replace them.

There is a silver or gold sharpie fine tip marker that I have used on hockey pucks that works good, check your local office supply store.

Thanks, you two. Blastinbob, Do you know if the metallic one is a permanent marker?

Hello pintsized:

I know for a fact from using it that alcohol will remove the marker from non-porous surfaces, so do not use Windex on your frame at all because that also will tend to take it off.

I just thought of something: varnish over the autograph. You can protect it that way. The rest of the bike will stay nude. The autograph will stand out even more under the clear coat of the varnish. You could use tape to make it an even-shaped varnish cover over the autograph.

I've never tried to rub it off, but I would imagine that it could possibly be rubbed off with some effort. I don't think any marker is going to penetrate into the resin. Do clean the area you want signed with alcohol (not beer) first though. The varnish/clearcoat may work, you could try some krylon clear in maybe a satin finish, but do a test first as it could make the silver sharpie bleed. Do you have a nude fork or carbon seatpost, you could do a test on the seatpost that's inside the seattube or the inside top of the fork, then you would never see it, just use a scotchbrite pad to remove it.
