S**T! The first "ding" in my new Merckx Race
#632 - 01/13/04 01:35 AM (65.65.99.138)

I threw my chain last Friday. I guess the outside stop was set too far out, thus giving the front der. release to much momentum and it threw it off inside. This immediately got caught in the chain ring arm and RAMMED the chain into the chain stay. Dented the chain stay and BENT the chain. Had to get a new one. Now I have a fingertip sized dent in the chain stay with some nicks (which I am keeping a close watch on). I just hope it does not degrade (ie. break) as I have only had the bike for a month!. The good thing is that you don't see it because of the chain rings. The bad thing is - I know it's there! Oh, well. I'll just have to wear it out this year and buy a Majestic next year!

BTW - I went for 80 miles yesterday and felt great except for the sore quads (hills and some speed here and there). The Merckx is as close to a perfect fit for me as I believe I could ever get! Love it!

About 7 years ago we bought a new dining room table from a local artisan named David Grey. He's well known for his elegant craftsman style furniture. He delivered the piece personally and I'll never forget his parting advice, "Get a scratch in it soon, then you won't have to worry about it.". We're still waiting for that first scratch.

On Sunday I was riding my 9 month old Rivendell Rambouillet around Lake Washington and I stopped to check for what felt like a bulge in the tire casing. While rotating the bike around to get at the tire under the fender I dropped it and the head tube fell onto the curb. I thought, "That's gonna be the first scratch", but it wasn't. The crown race took the impact and didn't even get a nick. I'm still waiting.

Good one(s)!

I am probably more worried over the dent part (since it is Al) than the actual scratches. So far, no creaks or additional flex. It seems less important as each day passes.

It took me 1 year and 5000 miles to get a chip in the clear coat of my Calfee. I felt like sending it back to California just to get it refinished...I know how you feel.

you know - I got another scratch last week and this one doesn't hurt. I figure I got the bike to ride and race, so it is going to get dinged up. So use it as it was meant to be used - ridden hard! If it gets beat up this year, I'll have an excuse to get a "trophy" bike next year!

BubbaTex,
I feel your pain. In 1992 I had a Ibis Mojo MT Bike. I sold it later on and regreted selling it for years, especially after I had learned the company was no longer in existance. Last January, I found one in Boston same colaor and same size in the box. I purchased the frame and built it up with Shimano XT components. Two miles into the first ride I through the chain and sucked it up between the frame and the cranks (major ding in the tubing). Even though I cannot see the gash wihtout having to look in between the crank and the frame I know it's their. It still hurts to this day and problably always will. This frame cannot be replaced. It hurt worse than a bad relationship with some of my X-girl friends.

David

Oh man do I know how you all feel! I bought my Corsa new/old this past December. It had hung on a racer's wall for 7 years - never been built. When I unpacked the very-carefully packaged frame the day after Christmas, I was shocked to see a tiny little scratch right on top of the top tube. So much for my first scratch. No complaints with the seller - I scored a very good deal. After building it and riding it on the rollers for a month, I don't notice it anymore - but that first moment of unwrapping it - WAH!

Now, a couple months later, I receive my '74 Motobecane Grand Record back from the paint restoration shop, and lo and behold - I nicked it re-installing the headset. I guess I should just ride 'em and stop polishing 'em.

Dave in sub-zero Maine.
