Anybody?
I've done quite a bit on my mountain bikes, but not on the roads. The night thing gave me more hours of riding -- mostly before sunup mornings before work.
Anyhoo...
--Anybody ride on the road at night? --What kind of lights you use? I have some Jet Lights sweetness. Bar and helment. --Any chance of out-riding the lights -- going too fast on my Ti rocket?
I have some pretty good country rooads real close. Seems like a "why the hell not?" to me. But still wondering on any thoughts/experiences that might be out there.
OK, Nev

I ride at night all the time. I'm an urban rider.
I use the Trek Disco Inferno rear light. It is the BEST! I use for a headlight the Cateye HL 200. I use it on blinking unless it is really dark. I had no plan to use the blink setting. It comes on first so I tried it. Cars pick me up much faster and easier.

I can't deal with the triple-digit temps like I could when I was young, so if I can't get in a ride in the early morning before the day heats up, I wait until sunset. The heat starts going out of the air pretty quickly, and it's a treat being out while watching the glow fade from the sky as the stars come out.
I use a CygoLite Night Rover sometimes, or one of the earlier model Performance Dual Viewpoints, but my favorite setup is an old TurboCat Stealth/Secret Weapon combo--sturdy, good run time and intense white light. For taillights, I like either the Specialized Afterburner (truly obnoxious) or the small NiteRider ones, which have bright LEDs and good optics.
I dunno about you, but unless I'm on an incredibly steep downhill, I'm not likely to outride my lights.

I'll have to try a night ride this week. Wonder what kind of critters I'll see moving silently down the roads? Seen enough on the trails to give me a spook. Although I won't miss the spider webs. This should be good, and fun. Can't wait. Give a new life to my lights. If anyone's ever thinking of getting some, I highly recommend Jet. http://www.jetlites.com/

I ride at night during the winter months and I use a Light & Motion Cabezza HID. It's a helmet mounted light with a battery pack that fits into your jersey pocket. I have the nickel metal hydride battery which is pretty heavy, but the new one has a lithium ion battery which is a lot lighter and more $$. The light is unbelievably bright....and is advertised as a 10 Watt HID which is equivalent to a 40 Watt Halogen. There are two brightness settings and the beam is focused on a spot (about 4 feet in diameter). The light also illuminates enough of the area around the spot center that you can see the road at fairly high speeds (20 mph). I use a cheap cateye flashing taillight.

I ride at night frequently in the winter time, both on- and offroad. Check if you are allowed in the forests after sundown, because sometimes it is forbidden I use a Lumicycle halide system which gives me about 4 hours at 40 watts.. great lights. I have the intelligent loader which stays on the juice the whole year through.

Something I would like to add to my post. In the back I use a cateye light, but not set to flashing since flashings lights (both on the front or in the back) are FORBIDDEN over here. No worries while offroad, but I have been stopped by the law (only to be gently reminded of the fact I should run steady lights instead of flashing ones) while riding on the street. They were quite impressed with my HID front light though (it was brighter than their car lights). Which brings me to another point. Make sure your front light does not blind crossing traffic ! I always keep mine pointed slightly more downward when onroad, ofroad it doesn't matter of course.
