I have been having problems with the screws coming out of the cleats for my Speedplay pedals. The directions and bike shop said to screw in the bolts then back off 1/4 turn. I used locktite, both blue then red, but still have problem with the screws not staying secure.
Any ideas on how to prevent the screws from coming out.

I wore Speedplays for years and 10's of thousands of miles and I tightened them along with blue Loctite. I don't remember the backing off direction. If it said that I missed it and I'm happy I did. I never stripped a screw so I don't see the reason to do it. It seems to make sense that if you don't make something tight it will loosen.

The reason Speedplay tells you to back off a 1/4 turn is because some shoe soles have a slight curve and overtightening the cleat screws can cause the cleats to take up that curve and not have secure engagement with the pedals. If your cleats are mounted on an adaptor plate (which will have a flat bottom for the cleats to mount on) or the soles of your shoes are flat, you can tighten the cleat screws without backing them off.

Clean the screw holes in your shoes. Loctite makes a primer, but for your purposes, you can get away with rubbing alcohol. If you can get some pure(r) alcohol (work or lab) use that instead. Stay away from acetone, kersoene, brake cleaner... That stuff may destroy the plastics in the shoe.
After cleaning the shoe holes, clean the threads on the screws and reapply the blue loctite. Install as directed.

Almost forever. You can get the Red to release, but it generally requires heating with a torch. ...obviously not too good for the shoe

I have speedplay zeros and also experience frequent loosening of the screws. I have used red locktite and it won't hold for more than a couple of months. I have gotten into the habit of checking and re-tightening the screws every other ride.

WAG (but educated): When they manufacture and thread the metal nut or insert in the shoe, they use oil. That oil is interferring with the Loctite. Try cleaning the threads.

Update on the Speedplay issue. Emailed the company and they instructed to TIGHTEN the screws 1/4 turn after getting them firm. I did and also used locktite and have had no problems. Somehow the LBS misinterpreted tighten.
If anything, it is now easier to engage the pedal. Thanks all for your comments.

I certainly love mine. It would take some sort of major advancement for me to look at another pedal anytime soon.

I used blue Loc-tite as recommended by Speed Play. i have had absolutely no problems with my set up. Frankly, I think these are the best pedals ever.

What size screws do the Speedplay cleats use? I just checked my shoes and I lost a screw. This the second one I lost in eight months and it is always the same screw. Can I pick replacement screws at a hardware store?
By the way, I too will never ride with any other pedals but Speedplay. I tried the Shimano SPDLs for about a month and couldn't get use to them. So, I bought the Speedplay Light Action pedals and they are extremely easy to clip in and out of.

4x11mm flathead screws, take one to your hardware store for comparisons sake. I lost a couple of mine and was able to replace them at my local hardware store. I also got the longer baseplate screws (for my Diadora shoes) there for much, much cheaper than buying the speedplay prepackaged units.
