Nine / ten speed compatability
#6963 - 11/09/05 11:09 PM (88.110.1.87)

Hi, first post on here.

Can anyone tell me if a nine speed Veloce rear mech will work with ten speed shifters & cassette? As the overall width of the cassette is about the same I can't see why not as the indexing is controlled by the shifters, or is the geometry totally different?

Put a post on the Serotta forum. That gets a ton of hits from good cyclists and a great many knowledgable folks. This forum is a little more quiet but still my favorite.

If the Veloce derailleur you have is the later generation of 9 speed it should work in the application for 10 speed you are wanting to use.

Interesting.

My mech is five years old, when would the latest version have come in and what would stop it working with ten speed shifters?

After all, both versions index properly on the nine.

Joe i'm not sure about the first generation 9 speed ones simply because i never had much opportunity to work with that system, so im basing my statement on the later 9 speed ones i have worked with.
My recollection with Campys first generation 9 speed was that it was revised soon after their 10speed became available.
So that will put the time frame for the first generations of 9 speed at around two years of manufacturer, before there was a revision to them.
The easiest way to confirm the situation you are trying to do is to fit the part and see how the indexing lines up.
