I guess this only pertains to D'fly owners, but I was wondering if anyone's been asking for some extra doodads (shapes/cutouts) added to their shaped lugs during their frame's build. Looking at some steel-lugged frames for comparison, we commonly will see cutouts in the form of heart-shapes or in other displays of craftsmanship extended points to the lugs. Has anyone asked Craig if this can be done? I think it would be cool if he could pull it off.

Nev,
Columbine is nice, but a little over the top. The samples below are a little closer to what I was thinking, but even here I included some ideas that are...umm, a bit too radical.
In all practicality I assume Craig needs are good portion of lug surface to bond lugs to cf pipe. I'm not sure which is the stronger adhesive, silver or brass braze or an epoxy resin. I suspect contact are is critical to Calfee's thinking. But maybe drilling holes or cutting small heart shapes and painting them in a contrasting color is possible. Dunno.
Anyway, here's some other artistry, that if CF can handle it, all the better:

Howdy Kevan, Yea, some of that Columbine stuff I'm sure is fine for riders in, well, you know, Pixie Land, and places like that. Just having a little fun also around this joint.
Here's a link I posted in the Lugged Steel Traditional room/area a while back. It's another Vanilla, single speed Fixed gear. It's all custom. Not mine though unfortunately. And unfortunately the photos don't do the bike justice. At least I know this guy plans on riding this piece of art regularly -- at least he says so. Enjoy. And nice links you posted, too.

David Bohm does some interesting stuff with lugs and metal: http://www.bohemianbicycles.com/photo_gallery_6.htm

My 1977 Nishiki has some decorative lugs on it. I guess this was routine once upon a time. And it's now just my townie bike. If I can figure out how to take a digital photo I'll post it.

Pint,
"I guess this was routine once upon a time."
I wouldn't say that at the steel bike convention. Those guys carry pipes. You'd be surprised how popular steel-lugged frames continue to be.

Steelman has been working with the the Deda carbon products including the DCS kit of carbon lugs and tubes. It builds a pretty good bike.
Anyhow, he has started to do some mild shaping of the lugs. As I understand it, for the adhesive to hold a carbon lugged frame together, it needs a large surface area. This is rather different from steel lugs where even a 'bikini' lug will work fine. The typical steel lug can be heavily carved without imparing functionality (some people will even claim that it improves functionality by reducing stress risers).
Things don't seem to work the same for carbon. This is too bad. I'd be happy to try carving up some DCS lugs if it wouldn't prevent me from creating a solid frame.
