Greetings.
Yesterday, I had the particular pleasure of breaking my Dura Ace chain. The bike has approx. 2,800 miles. I had lubed it quite thoroughly the day before. The temp was in the 40s. I am over 200 lbs. It happened as I reached a short very steep hill and decided to get up on the pedals and gut it out.
Utter bummer. I had to walk more than a mile to reach a subway (in NYC).
First time in my life this has happened. Before buying my current bike, I have had a variety of low to mid range bikes. On one, I put on more than 10,000 miles without ever changing the chain.

It was a hard lesson for you. Low-end bikes have thick chains since weight is not an issue, and they used steel rings and cogs so chain wear was much less an issue. Modern bikes using lightweight chains should be changed before stretch becomes 1/8 in in 12 inches. The mileage you had before your chain broke was about par for your weight.
