I finally got the chance to ride with a club. Early am I went for a 20 mile run and met up with a local fast roadies group. We headed out from slo to a backroad with a long grade and hill and arrived at Hwy 1. These guys are fast, we rarely paced below 23mph and often hit 25, I was happy that I could stay with them and though a bit slower on the hills it wasn't enough that I was dropped and I quickly made it up on the flat stretches. We rode into Morro Bay and hit a long straight with flats and some 1% descents. I let loose a bit on the Stiletto on this section and hit in the low 30s, the group tried to stay with me and caught me at one point but could not keep with it and I put about half a mile between us and cruised up a hill with the group nowhere in sight. I pulled over and waited. On the way back the pace again was fierce and we hooked up with another club, there was much laughter at my bike. Oh, well. The fast group sprinted away and I stayed with them until a steep hill, on the descent I got a flat...they were nowhere to be seen after my mishaps with the bike tipping over and a bent valve stem. Cycling teaches patience.
Total ride 69 miles, average speed 20.7.
Thanks again to Calfee for making a bike that I can stay close with fast riders and not kill myself!
Michael on the coast...
