FSA front derailleur
#7530 - 03/09/06 06:36 AM (67.166.150.131)

Looks like we might need another brand of bike components to talk about. My custom Calfee Tetra Pro has the FSA Gossamer front crankset and the FSA front derailleur. I rode it yesterday without thinking about it and it shifts as well as full Ultegra does.

I have people tell me that nothing will shift as well with Shimano parts as a Shimano crank. I like you can't really tell a difference with my FSA cranks. I still have Shimano on other bikes. My mt. bike has a non-Shimano crank and the lower end weighs a ton Shimano crank worked better over that non-Shimano crank but this isn't true with FSA.

I just had the new Frt D and K Force Compact put on my Fly. Last year I had an SLK Compact. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Hi Lon,

Yeah, I have no brand prejudice to speak of. I got the Ultegra kit on my last Calfee simply because it was the best bang for the buck at the time. I had Tektro brakes on my Giant and I had no issues with braking; They just worked. From some people if you bought into what they were saying, Tektro brakes are so bad they are dangerous to have on a bike. It just isn't so. Bits on a bike perform simple mechanical functions. It just happens that Shimano was focused on growing and was able to become dominate, not because of technical superiority but due to superior marketing. I am not saying they are not superior in a technical way, Shimano makes very good stuff. That said, it aint rocket science.

I remember when Suntour was a well-known good brand.

Brakes new [Re: Insightdriver]

I had Suntour Superbe Pro on a bike that I recently sold. It was an awesome group that always worked right. I told the guy (a friend who needed a road bike) that when he did not want it I'd buy it back.

Brakes...it may depend on where you live. Coming down a 20 percent grade...I'd take my D/A brakes, Record, I also hear the Mavic brakes work very well. In other riding I don't think it matters as much. That is as long as somebody doesn't open a car door and you don't stop in time....
