Easton Velomax Orion II wheels
#7547 - 03/17/06 05:35 PM (65.116.254.10)

I am looking for wheels for my Calfee Tetra Pro. Do any larger people have experience with these wheels?

Thanks

I used to have some Velomax circuits. I thought they felt kinda dead, and they were not light, although they were aero and strong. The Orion wheels are suppossed to be fairly durable. The do have a good design. I had problems with their cassette hub bodies though. They wore out very quickly and the tools to repair them are proprietary. The second time it started to wear out after just a couple-three thousand miles I unloaded them to a teammate (who knew about that issue and liked them anyway). Like Shimano shifters do sometimes, the hub would fail to engage in very cold temperatures, a sign it was wearing out. I like to roll with stuff that doesn't let me down like that. Maybe they have that problem resolved, that hub was designed four or five years ago.

I think the hot rim for that kind of thing though, is handbuilts with the DT 1.1R rim. Pick your high quality hub and spokes to suit your riding style and weight. My set weighs under 1500 grams is strong and very very responsive for climbing. Still decent for flat riding too. DT Revolution spokes 28F/32R, with DT double butted spokes on the drive side. Slap some Conti Gp 4000s on those wheels and you're ready to fly.
