Grizzly Peak Century
#7723 - 05/12/06 06:23 AM (71.131.67.83)

GPC is one of my favorite centuries and I've registered for it for almost 20 years straight now! They changed the course a little bit this year, don't know the reasons, but change is usually a positive attribute. The most notable change is that the last rest stop (before lunch) got moved about 4 miles down the road. Not a big deal except it used to be at the top of Mama Bear hill. It was a welcome spot for it too since a fair amount of climbing had been done since the rest stop before Mama Bear. Needless to say, I was quite a bit shocked, concerned, dismayed and confused to arrive at the top with empty water bottles and see no signs of aid! Since I don't carry a map for the ride anymore, I looked at my friend's and saw the surprise.

The ride before lunch is about 71 miles but I know several shortcuts and a friend and I took one that turned the loop into a 47 mile course. ...Much more suited to my conditioning level considering neither of us had ridden the past few months. Still, I felt like crap at the end of the ride and was pretty tired. As always, lunch is the best around and my friend and I sat under the only (tiny) shade tree and ate while we waited for our other friends who rode the entire 71 miles.

While sitting at lunch, I started talking with a couple who rode in on a recumbent tandem. We talked about 'bents in general, tandems and the combination. Calfee Stilettos came up and told him my impressions of the Calfee when I test rode it last year. The tandem captain, who is looking to buy another(!) carbon fiber recumbent, looked over my shoulder and began commenting on the Carbonframes laying in the grass behind me. He started to tell me about the history of Carbonframes and how Craig Calfee designed and built them. Without turning around to see what he was talking about, I asked him if he was referring to the green one with a laptop bag hanging off the saddle (homework which I never got around to doing). He looked at me kinda strange with the how-the-heck-do-you-know-what-I'm-talking-about-without-turning-around look. He said "yes" to my query and I told him that was my bike! We then got off of the 'bent topic and switch to the differences between Calfees of old and Calfees of today. Anyhow, soon enough, my other friends arrived and the tandem couple went off to finish the second half of the ride.

That was a great story. I thank you for posting it.
