...this was an imperfect* world. Right....? What production frame would you
(A) Ride?
(B) Why?

Merckx...Time...Pinarello...Look...Trek...etc.
You know, the stuff you're watching the teams ride on OLN (I trust) and reading about in Velo (I hope) and so on.

*Sad, but true.

I'd have to ride em to make my decision properly, but since I haven't I can only base my choice on looks.

That being said, I would go with a BMC rig; they suuuuure look zexy.

Whatever the choice, just stay away from those Trek forks eh?

Tough call for me. Mabye Cannondale, since I have fond memories of my Cannondale panniers way back when there only were steel bikes.

Gotta say, after watching Paris- Roubaix I'm very interested in the Cervelo R3. If it is as strong, light, laterally stiff, and vertically compliant as they say, I'm going to be hard pressed not to at least try one out this summer.

This being a Calfee forum.............I'd have to say that my pick would be a stock geo Serotta.

The new LOOK.
I've been doing a lot of seeLOOKwatch on the new LOOK frames. I just fondled one (is that the right word for bike addicts?) from a shop and boy, they are light ... and sexy too

A. Firenze
B. Because I want an "any weather" beater bike that never needs to be locked, washed or maintained.

A. Scapin
B. Because I like classic Italian chroming and lug styling as much as I like the gussets on Calfees.

A. Any Celeste colored, top of the line, steel Bianchi.
B. I like the old steel Bianchi frames regardless of how much they used to beat me up. You can get them in colors other than Celeste, but I'm one of the few who actually like that color. Actually, I'm ambivalent about Celeste, but I like it now.

When did Cannondale make a steel frame? I'm sure it was in their early days, but do you remember the year and model?

LBS get upset?
Nope.. not a bit.
In fact they are like big daddy pimping their daughter, sometimes they would even let you take her home to see if it fits hahaha

The high-end carbon Scott road frames would be my vote - the wide carbon weave looks great and those things are light!

Skuke, man, read the post a bit more carefully. Cannondale made panniers and bike clothing before they started making bikes. I was around then and got a set of their panniers. I currently am wearing a Cannondale shirt with the little wrench for the zipper tag and the shorts with outer shorts with baggy pockets and the Cannondale C logo on the side.

Before they started making bikes, I had never seen an aluminum bike. I'm 53, I grew up on steel bikes. I was around when Cannondale wasn't making bikes. They made panniers for bikes.

I did not imply that Cannondale made steel bikes at all.

Sorry, my bad.

Since you said "...back when there only were steel bikes", and Cannondale was founded in 1971, you got me thinking and looking.

It is worthy to note that wooden (bamboo too) bikes frames were the norm at the turn of the 20th century. But in more recent time, but still before the birth of C'Dale, bike frame engineers and designers had production frames made of many materials other than steel.

A French company introduced a cast Aluminum bike in the 1890s!

Fiberglass, and molded plastic were produced in the early 60's.

Speedwell of England produced 10,000 Titanium frames in 1973. Ok, after C'dale's birth, but pretty close.

My source for all of the above came from Bicycle Science 2nd edition by Whitt and Wilson. Other source report that Speedwell had production Ti frames in the 60's.

Yes, Skuke, you are correct; there were bikes made of more materials than steel. For the typical casual cyclist of the sixties, though, when one went into a typical bike shop of the day you likely would not see anything but a range of steel bikes.

A little side note: my vintage Cannondale bike shirt and shorts are proudly made in...

The USA, Bedford, Pennyslvania as a matter of fact.

True on the BMC.

I finally watched the race on Tivo last night. What a wild crash for George. The disbelief on this face, hands straight at his side, right before he went down, I'll never forget. Separated shoulder I hear. I wonder what this means for the rest of his season?

Time had to reinfoce Boonen's bike because he was flexing it so much it wouldn't shift in his 11. He lost one race/sprint over that. If for no other reason I wouldn't buy a Look because of the graphics.

Well, the Time is a super stiff responsive bike. It's probably the best production frame/fork out there right now. The Look 585 is a nice frameset too but not compared to what Time is now putting out. I've ridden a Time and it's light, efficient and fast. I also don't think any mere mortal is going to complain about it's stiffness. The thing is a rocket! Decals..love 'em or hate 'em.

They did have to modify and stiffen Tom's bike...really. One of the strongest riders I know has ridden the Time and he agress with you. Maybe Tom isn't mortal? I think there are some sprinting next to him right now that would agree.

I did not mean to knock the Time frame based on that. It was more of a commentary on Tom.
