How to Tell if Merckx Frame is a MX Leader
#779 - 01/24/04 10:16 PM (24.162.61.226)

Thier is a Merckx frame on EBAY for sale but all it says is this is a Eddy Merckx Columbas Max Frame. Know where on the frame does it say MX Leader and I cannot tell if this frame is a MX Leader. The tubing is hsaped like the MX Leader. I am not sure if this is a very early production model. Do all MX Leader frame say MX Leader? Can some one please help?
Thanks
David

Though I do not know for certain about MX Leader labling, but I do know that he built bikes with Columbus Max tubing that were not labled MX Leader. For some reason, I think the MX Leader name came later on.

I've heard that early versions using the standard MX tubeset were prone to breakage; something about the stresses and the thin wall tubing. The Merckx Leader tubeset actually uses a smaller diameter top tube with a different orientation to give more compliance.
