old bikes new
#7942 - 08/11/06 03:53 AM (4.246.60.154)

Anybody (Superunleaded?) have any thoughts on what an old Vitus (circa mid 80's) with a mix of Shimano 105 and 600 (not Ultegra) components might sell for? I'm staying in a cabin in Tahoe at the moment and there is one sitting in the garage unused. I thought I'd make an offer to the owner but I'm not sure where to start.

...I need another antique bike (that rides like a wet noodle) to add to my collection.

TIA

I got mine for 200 clams which I can not make a pass. Full 7402 Dura Ace with a lot of freebies and the frame and fork is in mint condition, no scratches at all. The guy was selling it for 250 but since I speak his language, I was able to grind it down to 200. But on ebay, I see the price from the low 300 to the high 400s with the occasional low 500 and from their description, the condition doesn't even come close to what I have.
I say go talk to the guy and feel how attached he is to the bike. If he says he hasn't been riding it and its just sitting in the garage, offer him in the lows (whatever that is ). I'm sure you can figure it out if he will sell or not just by talking to him.
I hope that'll help in your pricing. I just got lucky on mine, but then again, that's what I do, wait for some good deal that I can't say no.

PS
My Vitus is no noodle at 50cm.

Thanks SuperU!

I've known the owners of the cabin for about 20 years. The bike belonged to their deceased son who was a friend of mine. We used to go on the occasional ride, but I forgot all about the Vitus. It too is in perfect shape and just needs tires (old/dried).

This one may be a noodle. It's a 55-56 and a tad too big for me. But hey, so is my Moser. ...Ain't a 50cm a bit small for you?

Thanks again.

My range of frames varies from 49cm to 53cm and the Vitus fits fine. Frame geometry I guess plays a part of it. I built a 52cm Wilier Mortiloro at one time and that bike was too tall for me so I decided to sell it. The RB-1 is at 53 CTT and that too fits just right.
I think I'm taking too much time building the 54cm 3Rensho to see if that'll fit my riding style. I have all the parts but I'm enjoying most of my time on the saddle. Maybe when the weather turns cold, I'll get to it.

I remember those! They made nice crit frames!

The Vitus in the cabin garage includes some spares and another set of sew ups rims. I'm now remembering what a hassle it is to repair sew ups. ...especially on the side of the road when you run out of spares and you're on the 3rd flat for the day. But, that's another story.

I think 3Rensho is more popular with track frames.

I burned the midnight oil last night and put the bike together.
Pics will soon follow.

Tubulars? Man, the black and yellow Vittoria tubular on the unfinished 3rensho got toasted. Remember when it hit 119 here in the Bay Area about a month ago?
Well, those Vittorias developed a hole right at the stem, on both of them. These are brand new tires, never been glued. It prolly got really hot in the garage that it cooked the inner tube which are very thin by the way. I sliced 1 up to see if I can do something about it but the hole(5mm X 3mm) looks like its been singed by a hot iron. Other tires, clincher and sewups, in the garage with the Vitts were okay.

So? U gonna buy the Vitus?

I don't know if I really want it. My wife and I have an arrangement. I can buy any toy I want. But, I must get rid of a "similar" item to make room for the new one. So which bike do I get rid of?? ...howz about my wife's Bianchi or old Raleigh 3 speed hehehe.

...and, we keep looking at tandems.

I'm tweaking an old Santana Elan at the moment. Trying to drag the missus to ride with me on one of the club rides with a bunch of tandem riders.
