I was wondering what everyone here likes/rides with when it comes to shorts. Do you like a traditional short or bib style? Any particular brand loyalty, if so why? Is cost the most significant factor to you when buying shorts or maybe the chamois?
I made a transition to bib shorts last year and have really enjoyed them. So far I've only used performancebike's ultrabib but I recently saw a pair of Bergamo bibs at my LBS that looked downright comfy. I'm looking to try out a few different brands perhaps and am hoping for some outside opinions.
Thanks!

Shorts are very much like saddles; what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the other.
My faves are Castelli with the Y3Pro chamois and Assos. I do a lot of long rides where 'natural breaks' occur and it's hard to do with bibs.

I alternate between Assos F1 bibs and Assos F1 Mille half shorts. Alternating the two different pad designs helps keep the saddle sores at bay.

Our team kits are Santini. Their turnaround time for amateur teams is abysmal, but they are pretty much worth the wait. I have three pairs and they are great (bibs). They fit snugly around your backside which is key.

I just ordered the Performance brand bibs from Performance Bike. I should have them in about a week.
I am thinking that I made a mistake. They seem to be a good value, but my concern is that the chamois will bunch up on me and become uncomfortable. I know there are more expensive bibs where the chamois is designed to conform in a way to increase comfort. I may end up buying a more expensive brand, but I have sort of blown my budget on a new bike, pedals, helmet, etc.

Typically, chamois don't bunch up but can creep into places where they don't belong. It's been my experience that good, mid-priced shorts with a relatively thin chamois (not like a thick diaper pad) and judicious use of a good chamois creme (butt butter) keep things very comfy down there. I have Assos shorts (my faves) but if I'm going to be on the road for several days traveling on the bike, I use REI shorts. To me these represent a good value, have the thin pads I like and have lasted more than a couple of years.

I have used performance brand ultrabib for two seasons and they are an excellent value. They have 10 panels, a nice chamois and hold up well to the wear if they work for you.
Interestingly enough, Pez recently had an interesting article about the very manuf. (bergamo) I have been eyeing.

Thanks, you just saved me $100. I was going to move up to a more expensive bib. I have been spending too much on my bike obsession lately.

I've had good luck on shorter rides (< 6 hours) with the Hammer Nutrition re-branded Voler shorts. They're pretty minimal, but not as cheap in construction as you'd think they'd be for the price.
For anything longer than that (double centuries) I use Pearl Izumi Microsensor 3D shorts. They're pricey, but they're the only ones I've found so far that I can wear all day. I haven't tried Assos yet though.

Dave, I am glad I am not alone in my obsession, and I am sure you are familiar with how it works.
You can buy a medocre product, like for example shorts for $. They will probably be uncomfortable and slide down you backside while riding. Most likely you will hate them and toss them in the garage and then you have to spend $$$ for a much better pair. You have now spent $ + $$$ for the shorts. You could have saved money and just bought the $$$ stuff first. So, I usually just end up buying the best damned stuff I can get first which is often overkill.
Welcome to my obsession

Bruce: I've found it's much better to spend $50 once, than spend $25 twice.

Good grief Darby.
Carrying on...I've returned a couple different pairs of Performance shorts. Didn't work for me. In addition to other shorts/bibs I have, I also have a few pairs of inexpensive Cannodale shorts that have been incredible.

At least Performance does have a good return policy. I will try the bibs and see if they work out.
I realize that you don't always get what you pay for. Often, it takes a lot of research to know if something is good or not. This forum as been great; I learn from the experience of others.
