Hi,
I have a Raleigh with Shimano Tiagra's on and I'd like to ask if anyone has found any good sites on how to set them up properly.
I've been looking over the Shimano FAQ's, but they don't really go into much detail, or lay it out step by step.
I'm usually pretty good with mechanical stuff, but for some reason I haven't got round to bike gears yet. This isn't a particularly great bike, but it still cost hundreds, so I'd like to keep it running properly.
The bike's shifters were messed up and have recently been replaced. The gears were setup at the store. Then, on a charity cycle, the chain went and now they're completely out again. In particular, the front gears. They don't like shifting down onto the lowest cog (takes two clicks I think) and the it's virtually impossible to get them onto the third gear (I have to start messing around changing the rear gears to help slide it over on the front).
I could really use some kind of 'turn this, tighten this, listen for clicking, turn a bit more' style noobie, dummy guide to get me started.
Thanks!
John

Park Tools has a wonderful website that will take you step-by-step in the set-up and adjustment of your shifting. Follow the instructions, from first to last, in order, and that should get you up and running in very short order.
