I've finally taken the plunge and decided to plunk down some change on a set of D2 custom shoes. My fit kit shipped out to me today and I can't wait to get the ball rolling.
Does anyone here have a set and, if so, what color scheme did you go with?

I had never heard of these shoes so I Googled them. The shoes I found were close to $900 a pair. I guess if you can't find what you need off the shelf, then these may be a good option.
I bought Shimano R-151 shoes because I could order them in extra wide which has more room in the toe box. They were the most comfortable road shoes I could find.

They are around 600 if you don't get the custom last. I don't plan to. In the end it boiled down to the fact that my feet are kinda wierd and though I have never had custom shoes before, the thought of not having to put up with off the shelf shoes that hurt my odd feet was just too appealing.

I personally wouldn't cut corners on shoes. I was fortunate enough to find a pair of shoes that fit me for $150.00. In my opinion, however, it is more important to spend money on shoes that fit and don't hurt my feet than spend thousands on a frame to save a few ounces. Will they give you any kind of guarantee that they will not hurt your feet?

I totally agree, fit is everything - especially when it comes to feet.
After talking with them on the phone last week and having read a few things about the guys at D2 on the net, I am confident that the shoes will come out perfect. They might not be perfect at first but they said that when i get the shoes if they just dont feel right at all I can send them back as many times as I would like until they fit perfectly. They put no limit on the amount of times I can send them back to have them reworked or tweaked and that is a big appeal to me (since I can be pretty picky).
I explained to them about some bumps I have on my heels (kinda like bone spurs) and they gave me instructions to take a series of photographs with rulers (in addition to their foam custom fit kit where they take impressions of your feet) so that they can accomodate my needs.
I found out they make about 2 pairs of shoes a day and it will take about 2 months before my shoes are ready. Apparently that's quicker than their old turn around time of 7 months.
Their shoes are kinda known for the black and white checkerboard toes and heels but I just can't bring myself to go with that look - I'm more of an all black shoe kinda guy.

Carnac Helium or M5s fit me amazingly. I used to have fit problems until these came out. I have a large, but very narrow foot. These are easy to adjust the width with the strap system.

I have a wide forefoot but normal heel. Tried various shoes and finally ordered Rocket 7's custom  . Received today, but they are too short! I can't understand how they could make a shoe from a custom impression that would be too short. Hopefully they will make good on this

Man that stinks! One would expect them to be spot on. Any chance they sent you the wrong shoes?
Keep me posted on how they are to work with and what the shoes are like once you get a pair that fits. I debated for quite some time between rocket7 and d2 and ended up going with the d2s.

Update on Rocket 7's - I sent the shoes back with detailed coments on their fit. Rocket7 is anxious to please so it all may turn out OK in the end.

I got my full custom Rocket 7 shoes about 4 years ago. Best investment I ever made for the bike. Comfortable after 200 miles with no hot spots. If you can afford a custom shoe, go for it.

So after about two months of waiting (not bad for full custom shoes) my D2s showed up today looking even better than I had expected.
As luck would have it I have been in bed all week with the flu and a fever of 103+. So I will post some pics in a few days but the riding impressions will have to wait a bit longer.
Blast these nasty little viri!

I just sent my fitkit back.
Umlungu: now that you have had them for a few weeks, any hints/tips or whatever? What about pictures of the shoes?
What options did you choose for fit type?
Full custom or best fit?
Did you have them do any varus fixing?

I have had my shoes for a while now and really enjoy them. I went with the all black shoe and the silver straps. I also got the race fit I believe. I went with the best fit option with a custom toe box. I had Don make a few modifications to both heels as I have some wierd spur-type things that give me problems and had to be accounted for. I took pics of my heels and let them know about my spurs from the beginning so the changes to the heel cup were done as the shoe was made.
Don suggested I ride in them for about 100 miles or so before contacting them with changes. Out of the box on the very first ride I was totally blown away. The shoes are very light and its amazing the power that came from having my feet properly aligned. The shoe is very snug fitting and comfortable while riding. It is uncomfortable for me when walking in them (what cycling shoes are comfortable though when walking) but my discomfort is related more to my bone spurs than anything else. Riding poses no problems at all. So I will probably send them back before spring gets here, but it will be hard to give them up to correct an off-the-bike issue.
After the first few rides the leather seemed to soften up somewhat. The shoes are very thin because there is very little padding, but the quality of materials is so high that the shoe is very comfortable. It doesnt hurt that the insole is custom made for your foot. On the subject of insole, it's by far the best insole I have had, which is what I would expect for the price. I have high arches and never worn a custom orthodic before and I must say I didn't know what I was missing when it came to proper support of my arch. Two thumbs up.

Awesome, good to hear they are working so well for you!
Hopefully I got mine in just before the spring crunch, but we shall see. I did go for a mountainbike setup, as I am using frogs and like the idea of going on a 1-2 week long tour in the next year or so.
I'll keep you posted when I hear from d2.
