DA-10 - Rider Impressions new
#410 - 12/31/03 01:05 AM (24.34.152.94)

I have the full DA-10 on my new Klein Q Pro Carbon Team (56).

I thought the crank turned really smoothly and the shifting was very fast - clearly the best FD shifting (I also have DA9, Ultegra and Chorus on other bikes) I have experienced. However, I have chain rub (it's a 12-23 with 39 and 52 tooth chain rings) on the small chain ring at BOTH the top three sprockets and the bottom three sprockets, plus the chain shifted off to the inside (a first for me) as I was shifting going briefly and slowly uphill in search of no chain rub.

Can any of you DA-10 users report no or very little chain rub in your set-ups so that I can tell the LBS what I expect when it goes in for some build completion items?

Otherwise, I thought the hoods were a little narrow and my smallish hands did not care much either way on reach, despite what lots of reviews said on the topic. At this point, I might be inclined to go with a DA-10 crank and DA-9 everything else to save money and get the majority of the meaningful upgrade on my upcoming Orbea Orca build.

Throwing it open - comment on what you like and don't like about DA-10 (given that price and price fixing is a don't like for the non-LBS owners here).

I live on the steepest paved climb in the world (Haleakala Volcano, sea level -> 10,023 feet in 33 miles), so gearing is a problem. At one time I owned both the Dura Ace and Ultegra triples, both of which I thought sucked.

About a year ago, I got rid of all my triple rigs and switched all my road bikes to Ultegra double groups with XT rear derailleurs and 11/32 cassettes. I use Dura Ace cranks rather than Ultegra, because I'm an XL guy and ride 180 mm cranks. This current setup works WAY better than either grade of triple.

Santa brought me a set of Dura Ace 7800 180mm cranks and cups, which I installed on my Serotta Legend Ti about 5 minutes after dawn on Xmas Day. I have no chain rub, it works flawlessly, and it looks so cool I've been riding with my head down, watching those da kine cranks go round & round.

Shimano definitely got it right this time. Pricey, though. Ouch.

I just got a Litespeed Vortex with Dura-Ace 10 speed, 12-25 cassette. I have a 2003 Calfee Tetra Pro with an 11-21 9 speed Dura-Ace. The new components are definitely quicker in shifting between the chain rings.

I only have about 100 miles on my DA10, it is a weel old, the only slight complaint I have so far is the front der. trim. Unless mine is adjusted wrong (which I do not think it is) I am only finding one trim position. Other than that I love the new stuff. Coming from Utlegra with 12,000 miles, the new DA is soooooo nice

I am a DA 10 convert too however, I'm still in the process of collecting the parts I need to finish building up one of my bikes. Crank & bb installation was the easiest no-brainer I've ever experienced. I have the new STI shifters installed w/o cables at the moment but already like the way they feel while sitting stationary on the bike. It seems like there are more possible positions with these levers compared with Campy. I like that there's no thumb lever on the hoods. That's something I could never get accustomed to - even after 4 seasons with Campy ergo. As for aesthetics, the parts are a pure joy to look at. Like my pal the mighty skunk says... "those aren't components, they're industrial art!"

I have a little over 300 miles on my new DA 10. So far There is a big improvement over the DA 9 and it might be as good as record 10. I still can't get over how fast the FD shifts from little to big ring. Rear shifting is very smooth and quick. Overall its a very good system. It might end up being better than record but I am not ready to make that statement just yet. I will be putting a new DA 10 on my new Kirk as soon as Joe Bell is done painting it.

The old Dura-Ace had several trims. I doubt if that changed.

I would get the directions out of the box. I would bet that nobody read them. If not the set-up could be a little different thus causing the problem.

For example there are all sorts of Dura-Ace Triples that were set up incorrectly. Way too many wrenches assumed that it set up the same as Ultegra and it does not. There were all sorts of unhappy people with their DA Triples because of it.

Enjoy.

I've got the DA 10 speed group on a 2004 Seven Odonata frameset.
- N o chain rub at all on both the frt chain ring and larger frt ring
- Shifting is exceptionally smooth and quiet
- I love the extra hand position of the Shimano brake hoods, yes the shape takes some getting used too especially if you have smallish hands. However the shift levers are very, very smooth.
- I don't think the Shimano frt Derailleur has any significant advantage over campy.

Previously owned Campy 9sp Chorus, it's performance was spotty including chain rub on frt derailleur and constant shifting adjustments after shifting.

In terms of weight and price I think it's quite a value. Campag Record is lighter but significantly more expensive and they use Carbon on a lot of parts to lighten things up. Dura Ace is lighter than Chorus 10speed and close to Record but Shimano uses all aluminum (more durable, holds up better). Here are my weight calculations based on research into the different groups. I'm of course opening myself up for some fire...

Shimano Dura Ace 10 Speed
2005 Dura-Ace STI Brake Levers 419g
2005 Dura Ace Front and Rear Brake Calipers 314g
2005 Dura-Ace Front Derailleur (clamp-on adapter) 74g
2005 Dura-Ace Rear Derailleur 180g
2005 Dura-Ace Chain 280g
2005 Dura-Ace Cassette 12-27 10speed 180g
2005 Dura-Ace 39-53 Rings 175mm Crankset 740g
Total: 2187g

Campag Record Total weight 2198g

Campy Chorus carbon crank w bottom bracket 771g
STI Brake Levers 320g
Front and Rear Brake Calipers 340g
Front Derailleur (clamp-on adapter) 74g
Rear Derailleur 279g
Chain 202g
Cassette 12-27 10speed 220g
Total: 2206g

Ultegra 10 speed
2005 STI Brake Levers 490g
2005 Front and Rear Brake Calipers 330g
2005 -Front Derailleur (clamp-on adapter) 103g
2005 -Rear Derailleur219g
2005 -Chain 280g
2005 -Cassette 12-27 10speed 240g
