anyone know of a website or other source that rates local bike shops and their mechanics? for years now, my experiences have been more on the unfortunate side... whether it be poor advice, or improper/substandard maintenance, or just too much attitude. perhaps i'm better off figuring out how to do it all myself? any and all thoughts are appreciated.

I love my LBS but I learned how to do my own mechanics for our bikes. Two reasons: (maybe more) I could get the necessary work done without any waiting, save substantial money (we have more than a couple of bikes) and the personal satisfaction that comes with doing a job well. Side benefit of being able to help others when the occasion arises.
A very good source of info is on the Park Tools website, read about their Park Tool School http://www.parktool.com/clinics_training/parktoolschool.asp If nothing else, buy Park's Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair. This is used in their school and is well written, clear, concise and can take you through most everything including building your own bike up. There are other good books out there, buy them too as you can never have too much information.
If you do decide to work on you own bike(s) buy the best tools you can. There is nothing worse than to have a cheap tool cause damage on your bike or body. If you can't afford the best (not necessarily the most expensive) wait until you can.

The best bike shop on the planet is in my town of Minneapolis, MN.
One-on-One Bike Shop
You can't go wrong with Gene & Jennifer Oberpriller, Joe Parkin, and Reed Stelljes (ironicaly from my small German farm hometown of New Ulm, MN) running the show.
