Campy UT cranks on Calfees?
#8404 - 11/22/06 01:31 PM (72.84.39.98)

Just wondering if anyone has mounted a set of the new Campy Ultra Torque cranks on a Calfee and it cleared OK.In the past, some crank/bb combos have had clearance issues ,so I wanted to check to make sure.

Mine has an English BB shell, made 5/02.

I just tried putting on a 130 bcd Centaur UT set on a Carbonframes Tetra-Pro and it didn't clear. The driveside bolts rubbed slightly when held in by the retaining ring and then got really bad when the non-drive cranks were tightened to it. I had the same problem with D/A 7701. Guess I'm going back to the Chorus square taper cranks I had on before the 07 "upgrade".

I assume your frame has an Italian BB shell, right? If so,clearance may be different on mine.I'm probably going to get one and see.

Yes, it's an Italian threaded version, I'd guess circa mid-90s (since it's a Carbonframes). From my memory of the D/A install, the UT rubbed much more (ie all along the chainring instead of just the bolts and inconsistencies), if that helps you at all.

The fix for Calfees and CarbonFrames with Italian BBs was to install a 1~2MM spacer on the driveside BB cup to offset the chainrings the same amount to clear the chainstay. My wifes 2001 Tetra Pro has this.

Does this work for new spindle-integrated cranks? I'm worried that this would comprimise the strength of the Hirth joint in the UT cranks.

BTW, I also installed the 07 Centaur ergo levers and I'm not happy with the upshifting-one-gear-at-a-time business, either.

I'd contact Craig and make sure this will be a problem with the newer frames. It usually was only a problem with the older models. I do not have any spacer needs with a D/A Triple on one and compact Campy on the other. I believe at one time the older frames did need a spacer for a triple.

You would not do that when using the new style Campy UT cranks!

As another poster said, contact Calfee for info regarding clearances on your frame. Have your frame number handy.

IIRC, some folks have sent their older Calfee and CarbonFrames back to Calfee for mods that correct that problem and bring their frames up to current specs.

So for those of older Calfee ownership (97 Tetra,Italian BB in my case) what is the effective spindle length needed for older Campy? I cant imagine a Record 102mm BB would work,do you need a 111mm? I am currently running an FSA Gossamer Mega Exo with a 1mm spacer on drive side,46/36 rings.I have less than 1mm of clearance. When I used DA 9sp I put together a DA BB with a 112 spindle (taken from a XTR BB) I want to run the new Campy carbon crank but it doesnt look like it will be possible with the UT setup unless I get out the hack saw and make a considerable notch in the chainstay.

On my 94 Carbonframes tetra custom with italian BB, I have one of the old Sweet Wings crankset. As Dave above, a 2mm spacer was what was needed to allow the crank spider to clear the chainstay.

The hardest part was finding an BB spacer for italian threads. English bb cup spacing are 1.370" or 34.8mm x 24 tpi, and readily available. However, italian bb spacing is 36mm x 24tpi and is almost impossible to find as nobody makes one.

After searching on both the net and locally, I found 2 source who custom made a spacer for me. If you need one, contact Andy Muzi at www.yellowjersey.org

Hey long - time - no -post.

I put a set of Chorus UT cranks on my 03ish Dragonfly. Only problem I had was the cups went on too easy and the crank was creaking. Plumbers tape fixed.

It is a worthwhile upgrade, adding signifant feel of more 'body' on the unit.
