I cleaned my chain today new
#7704 - 05/03/06 12:51 AM (67.169.228.138)

I have one of those Park chain cleaners. I used mineral spirits in it and ran the chain through it and used a toothbrush on the chain as well, cleaning it throughly. In Sacramento it's a good way to clean the chain because it is hot and dry enough outside to evaporate the residue left after I dry it as much as I can with a clean work towel. I will relube the chain with Dumonde Tech Light.

I rode a 47 mile bike ride yesterday. The back of my right knee is sore. My right leg is slightly shorter than my left. I'll go up to my LBS and have him shim my cleat for me. That should take care of that problem.

I have tried both the Finish Line and the Park you have, I liked the Finish Line better because it did a better job with it's extra scrubbing wheel. The last time I cleaned my chain, I put it in a small bucket [large cup], shot it with "GUNK" engine degreaser, swirled it around, rinsed it with the garden hose, and soaked it in a really thin oil. This method seemed to work even better. I'm new to this message posting, so feel free to assist me if you want.

You have a LBS in the Sacramento area qualified to correct leg length discrepancies????????????????

Just adding a shim without adequate diagnosis is rather a juvenile approach. Of course it is cheap.

But, why don?t you find out from a professional what the issue involves? As an example:

QUOTE:
First, you need to understand that there are actual LLD's and functional LLD's. The former is determined by x-ray of the full legs and pelvis. Whether or not there is an actual LLD, there may be a functional LLD. That is, one leg functions as if it's shorter.

This could be due to alignment issues, muscle inflexibility, etc. and can be assessed by a physical therapist, chiropractor, exercise physiologist, etc. who may be able to identify paths to minimizing or even resolving the functional difference.

Before making any correction to your bike fit, you need to know how much of the shortage is attributable to the femur (hip to knee) and how much to the tibia (knee to ankle) before you can determine the amount of correction.

As a rule of thumb, correct 1/4 to 1/3 of a femur shortage and 1/2 of a tibia shortage. Many factors affect the final determination of this correction. Enroll your medical professional of choice to determine if your LLD is correctable or not.
END QUOTE

Yes, qualified to determine leg length, both tibia and femur, and also prolapse, among other things. It does take someone with a great deal of experience in exercise physiology among other things, but this certainly isn't rocket science. For what it's worth, on my current setup I do not have a shim and I have developed a riding style that has my sitting crooked a bit, with my hip slightly tilted. It works for me on long-distance riding; the kind of riding that you find pains in joints you didn't know you had. Riding balance is key and for me, it's not being symmetrical for I get right knee pain if I try to sit straight and with level hips on my bike.

Of course, this varies for each person. It does take an expert to determine proper fit. It also takes time, both in making measurements and in interviewing the client. Also, it was not going in cold, but having an ongoing relationship with the shop and having ridden a stock bike for thousands of miles that was dialed in, then making further measurements when I was set up for a custom build.

My bike just feels right for me. It's not that it's carbon. It's that I can close my eyes and lean forward and my hands naturally fall where they want to, in the right position on the bars.

Rock, why are you amazed? Do you doubt that there are people who are competent in proper fit in the bicycle retail industry? FWIW the first fitting was not free and it was not cheap.

As you can see I am new to these forums - From what I read in your previous post you are from the Sacramento area - you certainly have unusual posts - are you retired?

"I have developed a riding style that has my sitting crooked a bit, with my hip slightly tilted." How do you manage this and retain a balance position on your bicycle? This would mean you are always riding in a tense position - never being able to relax - or do you wear some sort of brace?

prolapse? nteresting word if you are referring to yourself.

Yes, there is a great deal of doubt there are any people who are competent in proper fit in the bicycle retail industry -
