There have been numerous shaving posts over the years here, but I haven't seen a comment on the use of Nair-like products. I'm considering the shaving thing for the summer Tri season, and the cost of waxing may be limiting to my hirsute self. If it's not discussed much, then I presume there must be some problem with this nair technique. What is the downside?

Smell is one unless they changed it.
The other is how sensitive your skin is. You have to try a small patch and see if it irritates your skin.
Most women still seem to razor so it must not be all that much easier. I put a little on my skin from a sample package I got at a ride and it turned my skin all red, blotchy and sore.

I tried Nair but it simply didn't work. My hair may have been too coarse or dense but it didn't work for me.
I've tried waxing as well but it didn't last very long (a little less than two weeks before the hair started showing), was very uncomfortable to get done, was relatively expensive, and resulted in more ingrown hairs than you can possible imagine. It was extremely difficult to shave after the hair started to grow back for probably two weeks or more due to the ingrown hairs and general follicle irritation.
Shaving in the shower is, by far, the best solution for me. Others may have different experiences of course. If I've stopped shaving, it usually takes a couple of weeks for my skin to get used to the regular shaving again - but once it does I have no problems.

When I used to race shaving just killed me. I would wax myself (sometimes with help from my girlfriend) which would last approx 2-3 weeks. I found this intially more painful but the relief of not shaving every day was worth it. Nair actually works well if you can keep it on long enough and your not sensative to it.

It is all personal preference! For me, Nair, is no good...the smell is awefull and my sensitive skin does not like it. A good razor and hair conditioner(not like PERT:)) is the best for me...better than shaving gels, creme, oils or lotions. I have found it is is generally better to shave every other day or so..it helps keep the irritation to a minimum. ...Mark
