Travel Boxes new

Does anyone have experience with the suitcase-like travel boxes for their Calfees? Do they take the beating of baggage handlers? What brands would you recommend? Do they make the flight you are booked on?

I have experience using the S&S hard case for my coupled Luna. The case is a little scuffed after being on 24 different planes, but I expect it to last several more years. There is plenty of room in the case for the bike; it's important not to overload the case with extra stuff or it will weigh more than 50 pounds and there'll be an extra charge.

I use these
This case from Performance.

They've always made the flight. But they cost a lot. Up $80 depending on who you deal with at the counter and what side of the bed they woke up on.

Keep in mind in this day and age the airline inspectors are going to open it to check it, depending on the airport. So careful how you pack it. Don't lock it or they'll cut them -- which has happened to me. Hopefully you can watch.

Nowadays I ship them Fed-X ground which is by far the cheapest. Way less than UPS. Easy to find the stores since they hooked up with Kinkos. $26 bucks one way from TX to AZ over the holiday. All you need is an address, can send them to a private residence. Tougher on vacation. But your hotel might accept it, can also look for an area bike shop.

I've had trouble with the clasps on this box but Performance has always been helpful. Never any problems with the bikes (I have two cases). I've shipped and flown with these cases a couple times a year. Worst with shipping is being without a bike for 5 days before you leave. But that's just extra reason to have more bikes.

Afterall:

b = n + 1

Whereas b = ideal number of bikes
n = number of bikes owned
