Chain Master Link
#8573 - 02/02/07 06:25 AM (66.27.146.194)

I would like to add a Master Link to my Campy chain to make cleaning easier. However, I am getting conflicting opinions. My local bike shop tells me not to use a Master Link, especially on a Campy chain. Although an engineer friend of mine that design bicycle components is recommending that I use a Master Link.

Any thoughts on this subject?

Bruce

Using Rock and Roll Gold after almost every ride and replacing the chain every 2,000 mi keeps the chain in good shape without having to remove to clean. Even the Record chain is cheap when you consider the problem a broken link will cause.

I'm still using 9 speed, but with Campy or Shimano chains, I have used Sram/Sach power links and NEVER had any problems. I hear Wipperman links are good too.

"Officially," both Campy and Shimano say you can't use their chains with a master link. However, in practice, I found this to be untrue.

Further, my friends who are running 10 speed, use Sram, Wipperman chains and links and have no problem. I would try it!

FYI, I like Prolink lube. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response. I like the idea of using a removable chain link and I have heard good things about Wipperman chains which I think all come with removable links.
