derailleur clamp question
#8707 - 03/21/07 02:00 AM (75.215.1.141)

i have a campy record ct front derailleur on a nude dragonfly. the clamp is the only silver component on the bike, and it sorta bugs me. it appears to be some generic silver clamp.

i realize this is a bit trite, but does anyone know if i can use a black clamp? which type? perhaps a campy record clamp? i'm told by a leading mechanic (armstrong's 2000 tdf mechanic) that there is no other "idealistic" option. i'd like an alternate opinion, and appreciate your input.

Colorado Cyclist lists Campy d?railleur clamps in black or silver. http://www.coloradocyclist.com/common/products/productdisplay2_v2.cfm?PRRFNBR=39307&CGRFNBR=483&CRPCGNBR=483&CI=1,225,483&TextMode=0

thanks, dave. i should have mentioned this was my one attempt at tracking down a black campy record clamp, but this clamp that colorado cyclist offers is not compatible with the ct front derailleur.

Paint?

It's aluminum so you can also have it anodized black (or whatever color).

Anodizing aluminum is a chemical treatment to the surface of the aluminum that protects it as well as can offer a color. http://www.anodizing.org/what_is_anodizing.html You'll see it in colored chainring bolts etc.

If your d?railleur clamp is a peculiar one, you may not have many choices. I've looked through my catalogs (many) and the Colorado Cyclist is the only one that offers up a black clamp for a Campy d?railleur of any kind.

Having a single small piece like your clamp anodized is likely to be expensive, relatively speaking, but if you've got your mind set on not having a silver piece on your bike. You should be able to find an anodizer in the Yellow Pages under that heading. If not there, call a metal plater and they may be able to help you.

See Dave's response.

Anodizing is the coating (colored corrosion in a controlled manner, actually) that you see on all the pretty colored aluminum parts.

It occured to me, however, that your clamp may be a casting rather than a machined piece or forging. Casting don't generally anodize well because of it's porosity. Check with the anodizer people for a more correct answer.

Here in the SF/SJ Bay area, minimum for black anodizing is ~$75.00. That would be several pounds of aluminum however. Even though your clamp weighs only a few grams, you'd still pay minimum lot charge. ...try walking in with a few 6-packs and ask for a favor. Black is the most common color and done every day. They may take you up on your offer of beer. Sacramento should have many anodizers in the Yellow Pages.

You can also anodize at home, but results are variable.

Yup. What they say. Anodizing is the way to go.

I was at a race last month and someone on our team had customized all the shiny parts on his bike blue. From the rims to the seatpost collar. Correct on the casting stuff though.

Take some before/after photos for us.
