Won't shift after a 2 year break
#8743 - 04/05/07 04:21 AM (4.242.30.211)

I have a 7 year old trek 5000 with shimano 105 shifters built into the breaklevers (slapshifting??). It has been hanging unused in my garage for 2 years and now they won't shift. I can shift up, meaning the shifter will pull cable but it will not shift down. It appear to be the same with the right and left. The shifter feels like it is moving freely but there is no clicking sound/feel that occurs when it suppose releases to the next gear. The bike has an embarassingly few miles on it.

Is this a common problem? Can I free up whatever is stuck with a little wd-40? Is this a job for the shop or am I up for a $200 replacement

Hope you can help
Jeff C

Jeff:

There's a good chance the problem lies with the cables. After sitting for two years the cables might not be moving freely within the housing.

If you're comfortable enough with replacing the cables (would suggest both the cables and housing) do it. If not, let a mechanic do it. If nothing else, I would take it to a shop and let them tell you what they think is wrong.

A couple of good shots of WD-40 in the shifter mechanisms wouldn't hurt at all and may be of help.

to anyone with this problem:
every "bike tech" i talked to told me this problem was only fixable with a new set of $200 dollar shifters. i heard this awful news and began to cry on my way home (me being a poor college student that just spent all his money on a new road bike). well i get home and just to try it out i threw some lubricant into the shifter and wouldnt you know it 20 min later it was shifting so beautifully you wouldnt have known it was broken. the problem being that the mechanism inside the shifter sticks after a certain point in time and needs regular lubrication. 20 min and $3 for wd40 at home as apposed to 1.5 days and $200 at bikesource. i hope this works for all of you frustrated shimano owners.

Great news!

Now that you've freed up the shifters with WD-40, you might want to dribble small amounts of some sort of chain lube into the shifter for a more long-term solution.
