Newbie Cyclist- Did I get a good deal?
#8831 - 06/07/07 07:35 PM (166.90.15.200)

I am relatively new to cycling so please be kind. I had been riding my husband's old steel Trek for a year and I finally decided to buy a bike that fits me (I'm 5'3" and my husband is 5'10").

A small bike shop near my house had a 2002 Calfee Tetra-Tri on consignment. The guy that worked at the bike shop said that it's an amazing deal for $862 (tax included!) and in his opinion the seller had severely underpriced the bike. The guy at the bike store was very nice (I didn't feel like he was trying to take advantage of my naivete).

The bike includes all Dura-Ace components, some fancy wheels with slick tires (?) and speedplay pedals. I ended up buying it because I took it for a short spin and it was so different from the steel bike! So much lighter! I use SPD pedals so the bike shop switched out the pedals for me.

I wanted to ask the experts here if I got a good deal? I have no idea how much a 2002 Calfee Tetra-Tri would usually sell for. I took the bike out for a short ride yesterday and so far I LOVE it.

By the way, is there such thing as an adjustable stem? The bike shop pointed out that there is something near the handlebars (or near the stem) that is adjustable and he said that is also a nice extra feature.

If anyone has any recommendations for beginner's routes in San Diego that would be appreciated too. So far I've only checked out Lake Murray, Lake Miramar and of course Mission Bay/Fiesta Island. Thanks so much!

I think you got you got a great deal! I purchased a used Calfee Luna Pro a year ago for $1,850 which seems like a lot compared to the deal you got. However, My Luna had almost all new Campy Record equipment on it. A year later and I have now changed everything on the bike except the cassette, seatpost, headset and shifters. Well, I became a little obsessed with my Calfee.

There are adjustable stems. They tend to weigh a little more but they can reach angles you couldn't reach with a fixed stem.

San Diego has a lot of great riding. You should look into some of the local bike clubs. I joined a club and found places to ride I didn't know existed.

Considering a new Tetra (frame only) from Calfee cost $2,395 and you got a complete dura ace build for just over $800 you got a awesome deal, even the older 2002 dura ace grupo is a great set up. If I had to use Shimano I would go with pre-2004 Dura ace because I can't stand the new shift/brake levers!

Thank you so much for your responses. I am very excited about the bike! It's beautiful and rides like a dream.

I took a closer look at some of the parts and I'm planning to do some research on Google. Here is a list of what I see so far:

Velocity Wheels (Model 6106-T6)
Michelin Pro Tires 650
Look Ergostem (8x-Tenos)
Selle Royal Eclipse Saddle
Dura-Ace brakes and derailleurs

I'm not sure if I'm ready to join a bike club yet. I've never ridden in a group before and I'm afraid I won't be able to keep up. If I can find a beginner's ride somewhere in SD I would be willing to try that.

Definite great deal. Anything under $1000 for a Calfee is great deal territory. The big issue is does it fit you, are you comfortable riding the bike?

Good luck with the bike.

I think the bike fits although I may have to adjust the stem a bit. I've only been on a few short rides lately because I'm trying to get my *ahem* nether regions used to the new saddle.

I'll try to take some pics and post them since I need help identifying whether I have a nude color frame or a clear frame. The color pics on the Calfee website look exactly the same to me.

Next item on my list is to find a roof bike rack that will fit onto a Mini Cooper with a sunroof!

If you find that the saddle is uncomfortable, I have been riding with a saddle since January that I find very comfortable. This saddle was recommended by Calfee and is put on all of Calfee's fit bikes.

Yow, you have *all new Campy Record equipment* on your bike and a YEAR LATER you've "changed everything?!"Why? What do you change to, Dura Ace? I don't get it?

Actually the parts are a mixture of almost new parts. Most of the components on the bike are about a year old.

Well, after I bought the bike I found out that the handlebars and forks were cracked and needed replacing. Luckily I found a good deal on a discontinued fork and bought the bars for a good price on Ebay. The new bars required a new stem because I bought the over sized 31.8mm bars.

A good deal came along on a used set of Topolino wheels and I just had to have them. You know how it goes.

Then, a few months ago a guy at my local bike shop had an almost new Campy triple for sale. Well, I live in an area with lots and lots of hills, so I replaced the front and rear DR, crankset and chain. I still have the old double which I might keep and use another bike some day or I might just sell the stuff on ebay.

The only parts left are the seatpost, brakes, shifters, headset and cycle computer. I will be replacing the cycle computer shortly. What I did learn from the experience is that I know what I like in a bike now. The next time I buy a bike I will just build it up from the frame.
