The letter to the editor who suggested we take the $25,000 grant and just buy bikes for Ghanaians was typical of how people think. It's the classic "Give them a fish and they eat for a day. Teach them to fish and they eat for a lifetime" lesson. The bamboo bike we brought to Ghana was designed to carry 400 pounds of cargo. The Ghanaians who saw in person and how it could carry two adults on the back were immediately impressed. Being familiar with bamboo, they immediately understood the concept and asked "We can make it here? Please show me how to do it!" So we did. The follow up trip will consolidate things and hopefully demonstrate that there is value in bringing jobs, a design for a more useful bike (rather than our cast-offs) and using a renewable resource for building a local economy. Check out www.bamboobike.org for some photos of the trip.
