Fulcrum Racing 1 Wheels new
#8980 - 07/30/07 06:58 PM (64.101.130.170)

Anyone have experience with this wheelset? After a year of battling with my Topo AC29 hubs I am finally sending them off to Topo service to have them looked at.

So I find myself in need of another wheelset and my LBS suggested the Fulcrums over the Mavic Kysrium ES. I know they are made by Campy and cyclingnews.com gave the set pretty high marks, but I was just curious if anybody had a strong opinion one way or the other on the wheels.

Thanks,
Michael

Have you had problems with your Topolinos? I have a set of C19s and I broke a spoke four months after getting them and haven't repaired them yet. This week I will send them in for repair. I have been using my back up set which are Mavics CXP 33.

Do you still like your Topos?

Bruce

Obviously you have had problems with your Topos or you wouldn't be sending them in for repair. Sorry about the stupid question. A better question is have the problems put you off of Topolino wheels?

The reason that I have waited six months to have my Topolino C19s repaired is I had started to questions their reliablity. However, I have decided it is worth taking another chance on them.

If you decide not to "chance" it...I'll take them.

hehe, yeah i have had quite a couple of problems with the Topos, mainly related to the hubs. A few months after picking them up I noticed the rear hubs made alot of clicking sounds while coasting. I took it to my local wrench who tried greasing the bearings a bit more, but the clicking came back. He found the bearings that came with the wheelset were just barely too small for the hub housings and called Topo who confirmed the bearing sizing is a known problem with certain of their wheelsets.

Topolino sent the shop new bigger bearings for both the front and rear wheels which seemed to do the trick. The new bearings had no problems over the winter, and have been fine so far this year till about 2 weeks ago when the same clicking returned, but this time in the front hub. My wrench, Topolino, and I agreed it was time for Topolino to take a look at them, so off they went this afternoon .

I still love the Topolonos, they are light, stiff, quick and ride like a total dream, I'm just sick of dealing with the same hub issues over and over. My wrench said he can't understand why I persist with the problematic wheels to which I replied, "Try riding them all day on chip and seal and you'll know why."

Once I get them fixed, I'll probably keep them for special occaision rides or put them on my next Calfee but I at this point I want a wheelset I can just ride with relatively few mechanical problems. The Fulcrum Racing 1s or 0s have pretty hot styling IMO, and I'm told the hubs are rock solid since they are campy.

Right after I broke a spoke, I would have taken you up on your offer. My anger has now subsided and am willing to role the dice one more time. Maybe luck will be on my side this time; if not I may be dropping you an email offering you a set Topos. That is, if you don't mind.

I haven't had any problems with the hubs on my Topos but then I only rode them for 4 months before breaking a spoke. It is my understanding that Topolino has done a lot to improve the reliability of their wheels, or so they say. I guess I will soon find out.

I think it is hard to go wrong with Campy. I have Campy hubs on my Mavic Wheels and haven't had any issues with them.

Let us know what you think of the Campy wheels.

Bruce

I am a rather big guy (6'3" @ 220 Lbs) and I have given up on light wheel sets. I just lost a rear on Velomax (Easton) Orion II and I think they are one of the strongest on the market. A drive side spoke yanked a section of rim out and the rim got into my chainstay on the Calfee. The wheel set only had 3200 miles on it.

I have never had problems with Mavic CXPs on Shimano hubs. I don't even break spokes and I have wheels that have 30K miles on them. The other thing is I only have them hand built by local mechanics that I trust.

I believe that light wheels take a lot of checking and care and should either be used on special occasions (not daily) or prepare to sent them off for repair often.

I just spoke to Topolino and they assured me that they have fixed the problem of the hubs loosening up. If they are correct, you may want to continue using them. However, it is probably a good idea to have a back up set of wheels, or a back up bike, just in case. I have been riding my backup set which are Mavic CXP with Campy hubs. I don't think these wheels will ever break, but then they don't ride like the Topos either.

It's good to hear they have solved the hub loosening problem.

I hope their "fix" isn't the new bearings they sent me last year since that didn't seem to work, though I am very hopeful once THEY get the wheels they can apply whatever fix and check the tolerances etc. The great thing about having them do it is that since they make the wheels, they will know best what to look for and how to fix em.

I do have a set of DA backup wheels that I found I am just a bit too heavy for. The rear wheel have mounted in a Conti indoor trainer tire and use M-F on my trainer. Since I ride both the trainer and outside each week, It looks like I need a backup "outdoor" wheelset so I don't have to be bothered with changing the training tire each time I ride outside.

Write anytime you want!

I do you wish you all the best for the wheels when they are fixed. I have read of hub problems in a variety of places. Any spoke problems I read about were easily fixed and did not return. It is just a pain as you know to get them fixed since you have to have a section done by them. I'm sure you will find them working fine. Just ask Bruce he has loved his through "thick and thin."

Take care.

I picked up the Fulcrum Racing 1s yesterday from my LBS. I had them install ceramic bearings too just for fun. I haven't ridden them yet, but look forward to it. These will have to do until the AC29s come back home.

Just thought I would share.
