Trike new
#9012 - 08/06/07 04:53 AM (71.131.23.155)

I was riding the Marin Century this past weekend and saw the Calfee recumbant tandem trike. Wow, that's a mouthful! It was an awesome Forest Green (I'm a bit bias though since my bike is the same color) and only had about 50 miles on it. As a result, the team couldn't really give me much feedback other than to say their previous trike weighed in at about 75 pounds! The Calfee is around 45 pounds according the website (look under Stiletto).

The bike has S&S couplers and some seriously oversized tubes. It doesn't lean like some trikes I've seen, but steers more like a car. According to the team, there is no camber and a little toe-in on the front end. They also said it was stable at "high" speeds and was also available in bamboo!

Oh yeah, Marin was both hot and cold with baking sun and chilling fog. I've felt better in previous years and suffered a bit this year due to inadequate saddle time :-(

Hey skuke,

I remember you at the start of the ride on your Carbonframes Calfee. We did the metric century and had a good time on our new Calfee Tetra Pro Tandem Trike. Yes, the tandem actually weighs just a shade under 44 pounds with pedals and seatpad. The bottom tube is the maximum for couplers, better for trike twisting and lateral forces. Craig also made a single trike also very stable as a prototype before making our tandem. It is on loan to http://bentupcycles.com/ to testride.
The steering geometry and design is based on Greenspeed http://www.greenspeed.com.au/trikes.html
We bought it based on carbon strength to weight ratio, Calfee reputation and trikes are stable, especially long wheelbase and oh so comfortable, and of course, they are low for stability as well. The carbon fiber seats improve comfort with the open cell pad which is evenly distributed over the whole part of my back.

Thanks, I'm sure you guys spoke with a lot of people during the day since you have such an unusual ride.

I remember seeing you near the registration and thought your Bruce Lee jersey was kinda interesting. Then when my friend pointed out your Calfee to me, I had to get more info! I have considered a recumbant and have test ridden a Stiletto, but never thought about a trike. I think a trike is too wide for my liking, but still think about a 'bent on occasion.

How did the metric century climbs work out on the trike. Did you get some awesome downhill speed? (Wilson hill?) Stable and secure feeling?
