Truth or BS?
#9141 - 09/10/07 01:38 AM (66.27.148.144)

Sometimes at the end of a long hard ride all I want to do is collapse in a chair and fall asleep.

Well, today I was in my local Performance Bike shop. One of the sales associates was talking about a drink that is taken towards the end of a ride and it is suppose to replenish electrolytes and proteins. He tells me that it will reduce that "fatigued" feeling that I get at the end of a long ride.

Does this sound like marketing hype? Protein and energy drinks might be good way of flushing money down the toilet.

There are supplemental drinks, I use Endurox, that replenish carbs and proteins, that are taken very shortly after rides. You can see many of these performance-type drinks advertised in the cycling media.

You should 'refuel' after a ride. Some use these drinks, some use chocolate milk and I'm sure there's a whole host of other stuff out there too.

There is outside scientific research that says this is a good idea. You might want to go to some of the product websites, which should tell the the whys of taking these drinks. They're not energy drinks in the same sense that Rock Star or Red Bull are, nor are they protein drinks. Read the literature, it will tell you what you want to know.

Thanks Dave,

I will do a Google search for some research sources.

There is scientific evidence that indicates post ride consumption of proteins and carb are better absorbed by the body. The sooner the consumption, the better. The better quality the protein and carbs, the better it is absorbed and better for you. Whether the supplements are of "better quality" is for you to decide. The drinks are easy to consume, but pretty expensive.

Having said that, I've used sports drink mixes with complex carbohydrates (not simple sugars) since the mid 80's. I firmly believe that on a long ride, they reduce incidence of bonking (hitting the wall, if you're a runner). The stuff I use now also has electrolyte replacements and a small amount of protein. I always have a water bottle with my preferred mix on any planned ride longer than about 2 hours.

...I don't generally drink another bottle of mix when I finish. I do try and eat some real food though. Pretty much anything will do for me including junk! ...then I fall asleep on the couch

Whenever I finish a long ride my wife makes me drink THIS recovery stuff.

But I enjoy THIS.

I drink the orange Endurox R4 recovery drink, but only when I have done a very long workout. For my daily rides I just skip it for convenience.

I started using the Endurox last year and definitely felt a difference. I couldn't ever tell if it was a totally mental thing or if the nutrition was helping. After weeks of puzzling , I asked a fellow rider that question to which he replied, "Who cares if it's mental or the nutrition, if you feel better then it works."

So that's the philosophy I adopted and haven't looked back.

Bruce,

I use chocolate Endrox after every ride. It really helps. I mix with milk instead of water, and it goes down real easily and I want to drink it. The other flavors you have to choke down. Ugh!

With out Endrox, I would get vicious leg cramps in the middle of the night. That went away after using Endrox.

Highly recommended.

Bruce

Jeff,

This looks good. I am going to give it a try.

Thanks,

I'll second that. Hammer makes some great products. I like the Recoverite as well. Endurolytes work for me as well in hot weather.
