Hello all,
About a month ago, I finally decided to break down and replace my 1996 Cannondale R600 (Campagnolo Athena group) with a bike I've always dreamed about...A Kestrel.
I chose a Friday evening when my wife and son gave me the night off, and ventured into a LBS that carried Kestrel. The salesman was very helpful and suggested riding more than one, but no more than 4, carbon frames to get an idea of how different each will feel.
Test bike 1: 2006 Kestrel Evoke with DA group. Result: Way to skittish for me. I'm sure I could have gotten used to the feel, but it was frightening on the downhills.
Test bike 2: 2005 Calfee Tetra-pro with Ultegra. Result: I had never heard of Calfee, and was amazed at how this bike felt. Instantly, I understood what a few friends meant when they experienced love at first ride.
Test bike 3: 2007 Orbea Onix with Campy Mirage. Result: The only reason I rode a third frame was because the DA and Ultegra groups didn't feel "right" compared to the Campy on my Cannondale.
I left the shop without a bike because of how much it would have cost (The shop wanted $3700 for the Kestrel, and $3400 for the Calfee with the current groups. The Campy change would have run another $700 or so) to have the Ultegra switched out for either the Campy Chorus or Record. It was only those two groups that offered the multiple ring change by pushing hard on the shifters. This was a feature across most Campy lines at one time.
When I returned home, I felt the need to further investigate that awesome bike I rode that day. In fact, I had scribbled "Carlee" on a piece of paper after leaving the shop so I could research further. :-)
After a bit of investigation, I found that that beautiful bike I had ridden was a Calfee (not a Carlee) and I couldn't find one negative comment on the entire Calfee line. This forum helped a bunch with info. I also stumbled across an ebay listing for a 2001 56cm Tetra-Pro with a Record group with a day left in the auction. At that time, the auction was at $1400 with a day left. I watched intently until the closing, and ended up snagging the bike for $1750 with shipping. It seemed like a bit much for a used bike, but if it rode anything like the other Calfee, It was a bargain in my eyes.
I received the bike (which was in incredible condition for a 2001) and had my LBS assemble, tune and go over it with a magnifying glass. My mechanic concurred about the incredible condition.
Here are the stats: 2001 Calfee Tetra Pro (nude carbon I think, I posted some pictures for you all to help me decide) Campagnolo 10-sp Record group with Carbon shifters and rear derailleur. Mavic Ksyrium SSC (I belive SL) wheelset.
I finally had the opportunity to get a quick 27 mile ride in on Saturday, and it was everything I hoped for. Definitely a big change from my Cannondale...which I just don't have the heart to get rid of.
Thanks for any help you all can give me on identifying the color.

Justin,
Welcome! Sounds like you got a great deal there. Look forward to seeing some pics of the beauty.
The Nude frame is very different looking from your typical bike. There is no paint on it - hence its nudity. These frames look very stealthy and shimmer only from the fibers themselves.
So if you have paint on the frame, then it might be a clear coated Tetra.
I hope this helps! Michael

Thanks for the speedy reply Michael.
It looks like the pictures are posted, but just waiting for approval by the moderator.
From your description, it sounds like my frame is nude. Pictures really don't do it justice, it's amazing in person...especially after a fresh coat of 303. Wow that really brought out the carbon weaves.

Sweet!!!!
Nude rocks because it does not chip and looks like new after you apply the 303.
Enjoy the bike. It does not get much better than a nude carbon Calfee with Record!

Strip all the shifty gear stuff off, get yourself a new rear wheel with a sweet Eno eccentric Fixed/Free hub and turn it into a single speed. It'll give it that Cannondale a whole new life to love.

Tempting Nev, but if one more box with bike stuff shows up at my door, or if she catches me at the LBS again, I'll have to sleep in the camper. :-)
I'll let this purchase cool for a while before making any moves. She didn't care about the great deal I got on the Calfee, her point was, "You already have a bike, I don't care if you paid $1 for that new bike, you didn't need it". hehe, it's been fun hiding all the new "toys" and sneaking down into the garage to work on the Calfee.

Looks like you're hooked. This new drug you just tried is very addicting Wait 'til you try the old drug everybody calls steel, that one there is very potent, especially if the mixture of component is just right.

Oh I have my taste of that as well.
Last Summer's project was to restore my Miyata 615 GT.
I used the excuse of restoring that one to assist in pulling around the 4-year old in his bike trailer. It's a good think she didn't realize that I could have done that without a new touring wheelset, Ritchey touring cranks, etc. ;-)
I'm going to have to rub the new parts in dirt as soon as I buy them (like my buddy does to help convince his wife that the parts aren't new).

hahaha that's a good one. The next thing you know, you 'll be in the flipping business. I mean buy and sell to camouflage the keepers. You tell the wife you are buying them for profit. you buy 2 and sell one and then the garage will soon look like a used bike store
It's prettry easy to do with singles, but when the addiction gets so bad you'd try the tandem drug, watch out. I'm past that part already, I'm on triplets now

b=n+1 where: b=the ideal number of bikes to own, and n=the number of bikes you currently own.
